Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a series of developmental initiatives worth more than Rs50,000 crore during his visit to Odisha on Saturday. The projects span multiple sectors including railways, higher education, skill development, healthcare, rural housing, and telecommunications. This marks his sixth visit to the state since the BJP came to power in Odisha in June 2024.
Focus On Higher Education And Innovation
PM Modi laid the foundation stone for infrastructure expansion worth Rs11,000 crore across eight IITs — Tirupati, Palakkad, Bhilai, Jammu, Dharwad, Jodhpur, Patna, and Indore — adding 12,000 new seats over the next four years. He also launched the MERITE (Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education) scheme to enhance research and innovation in 275 state engineering and polytechnic institutions.
Skill Development Boost
Under the Odisha Skill Development Project Phase-II, world skill centres will be established in Sambalpur and Berhampur with an investment of Rs1,979 crore, focusing on emerging sectors such as agritech, renewable energy, retail, marine, and hospitality. Additionally, five ITIs will be upgraded into ‘Utkarsh ITIs’, 25 ITIs will be transformed into Centres of Excellence, and a new Precision Engineering Building will provide advanced technical training.
Healthcare And Education Access
The Prime Minister unveiled a Rs3,000 crore master plan to upgrade MKCG Medical College in Berhampur and VIMSAR in Sambalpur into world-class super-speciality hospitals. These facilities will offer expanded bed capacity, trauma care, maternal and child healthcare, and dental colleges. To enhance digital learning, Wi-Fi facilities worth Rs90 crore were launched across 130 higher education institutions, benefiting more than 2.5 lakh students.
Railways And Connectivity
PM Modi inaugurated the construction of a rail flyover between Sambalpur City and Sarala at a cost of Rs273 crore and dedicated a semiconductor and electronic system design and manufacturing (ESDM) park in collaboration with IIT-Bhubaneswar. He flagged off the Amrit Bharat Express connecting Berhampur with Udhna in Gujarat’s Surat district. In addition, he dedicated the doubling of the 34-km Koraput-Baiguda rail line and the 82-km Manabar-Koraput-Gorapur section, built at a cost of Rs1,400 crore.
Telecom And Rural Housing
More than 97,500 4G telecom towers built with BSNL’s indigenous technology, worth Rs37,000 crore, were commissioned during the visit. The Prime Minister also distributed sanction orders to 50,000 beneficiaries under the Antyodaya Gruha Yojana, aimed at providing pucca houses and financial aid to vulnerable families, including persons with disabilities, widows, terminally ill individuals, and victims of natural calamities.
