On the occasion of revolutionary freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar’s birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying heartfelt tributes, remembering him as a “true son of Mother India” whose resilience and commitment continue to shape the vision of a developed India.
PM Modi hails Savarkar’s courage and ideals
Taking to social media platform X, PM Modi praised Savarkar’s unshakable patriotism, stating, “Even the harshest tortures of the foreign government could not shake his devotion towards the motherland.” Modi highlighted that Savarkar’s life story, marked by courage and sacrifice, remains a guiding force in India’s journey towards a ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India).
The Prime Minister also released a tribute video encapsulating Savarkar’s life, calling him a figure who represented “brilliance, sacrifice, penance, logic, and sword.” Modi recounted Savarkar’s time in the Cellular Jail of the Andaman Islands, describing his prison cell as a symbol of sacred patriotism and sacrifice.
Remembering Savarkar’s contributions
Born on May 28, 1883, Veer Savarkar was a multifaceted personality—a writer, lawyer, and a committed nationalist. He championed the Swadeshi movement, encouraged the boycott of foreign goods, and promoted cultural nationalism. His ideological text, Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?, remains significant in India’s socio-political discourse.
After being sentenced to 50 years of imprisonment for his opposition to British colonial policies, Savarkar was released in 1924. Post-release, he dedicated himself to social reforms including the eradication of untouchability, particularly in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri region.
Other leaders join in tributes
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also took to X to honour Savarkar, describing him as a symbol of courage and restraint, who turned the 1857 revolt into a historic moment through his writings. He praised Savarkar’s lifelong efforts to unify Indian society and eliminate untouchability.
BJP National President JP Nadda echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging Savarkar’s enduring spirit despite the hardships of Kalapani (Cellular Jail). He noted that Savarkar’s philosophy of struggle and sacrifice would continue to inspire patriots across generations.
Veer Savarkar also stood firm against the acceptance of India’s partition by the Congress Party, showcasing his strong nationalist vision till his last days.
