In a significant development amid heightened tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, security forces uncovered a terrorist hideout in Poonch’s Surankot area, seizing five explosive devices and foiling what appears to be a major terror plot. The recovery comes just days after the Pahalgam massacre that claimed 26 civilian lives, marking one of the worst attacks in the region in recent years.
During a joint operation conducted by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, five bombs, two radio sets, and three blankets were recovered from the forested region of Surankot. Security forces launched the operation based on specific intelligence inputs, intensifying the search for potential terrorist movements in the region.
LoC tensions flare hours after hideout bust
Shortly after the discovery of the terror hideout, the Pakistan Army initiated “unprovoked” firing across the Line of Control (LoC) in multiple sectors of Jammu and Kashmir. According to the Indian Army, ceasefire violations were reported during the night of May 4-5 in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajouri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor.
Indian troops responded “promptly and proportionately” to the firing, marking the 11th consecutive day of ceasefire violations. The continued breach of the 2021 ceasefire agreement has escalated tensions between the two nations, already strained after the deadly Pahalgam incident.
Diplomatic fallout and regional alert
The April 22 massacre in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians, has been termed the deadliest terror attack in the region since the abrogation of Article 370. Investigations reportedly traced links to a terror group based in Pakistan, prompting swift diplomatic and policy-level retaliation from India.
New Delhi responded by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, cancelling all Pakistani visas, and ordering Pakistani nationals residing in India to exit the country. Both nations have since downgraded their diplomatic engagements, with calls for a neutral probe being dismissed by India in favor of direct accountability.
Security agencies across Jammu and Kashmir remain on high alert as intelligence points to possible further infiltration attempts. With continued ceasefire breaches and uncovered terror hideouts, the region remains in a precarious state.
