Pranab Mukherjee

Former President of India Pranab Mukherjee would have turned 86 today if he would have been alive. Mukherjee passed away in 2020. He was known as the stalwart of politics and was called the Man for all seasons. The late politician was born in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on December 11, 1935.

Mukherjee was a prominent Congress leader and has been a five-time member of the Rajya Sabha and was also elected twice in the Lok Sabha.

Ahead of his 86th birth anniversary, here are some quotes that will inspire you to the core:

India is a land of plenty inhibited by poverty; India has an enthralling, uplifting civilization that sparkles not only in our magnificent art but also in the enormous creativity and humanity of our daily life in cities and villages.

India is content with itself and driven by the will to sit on the high table of prosperity. It will not be reflected in its mission by noxious practitioners of terror.

Teaching was my transition from student life to working life. In those days, our system of education was a little different. The number of students in each class was huge. I think in political science general, which I taught, it was around 100.

The government of India and the government of Jammu and Kashmir are determined to ensure that every Kashmiri lives with dignity having equal rights and equal opportunities.

If the rise of European colonisation began in 18th century India, then the rallying cry of ‘Jai Hind!’ also signalled its end in 1947.

I have seen vast, perhaps unbelievable, changes during the journey that has brought me from the flicker of a lamp in a small Bengal village to the chandeliers of Delhi.

Let Jammu and Kashmir lead the way in the building of a new future for India. Let it set an example to the rest of India and the world by showing how the entire region can be transformed into a zone of peace, stability and prosperity.

Opposition raises uproar in Delhi Assembly as 12 AAP MLAs suspended over CAG report

12 AAP MLAs, including Atishi, were suspended from the Delhi Assembly over a protest regarding the CAG report and a photo controversy in CM’s office.

Delhi Assembly protests over CAG report and CM office controversy

The Delhi Assembly witnessed high drama as 12 opposition MLAs, including former Chief Minister and current Leader of the Opposition, Atishi, were suspended for the day amid protests over the Comptroller and Auditor-General (CAG) report on the alleged liquor policy scam.

Senior AAP leader Gopal Rai was also among those ejected, following heated exchanges with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The Speaker, Vijender Gupta, then adjourned the House until noon.

CAG report fuels political storm

The much-anticipated CAG report, one of several alleging corruption during AAP’s tenure, was tabled in the Assembly. It reportedly criticizes the liquor policy implemented under Arvind Kejriwal’s leadership, stating that the “actual implementation was sub-optimal and objectives were not achieved.” The report also flagged concerns regarding the scrutiny of business entities awarded liquor licenses, calling for accountability and stronger enforcement mechanisms.

Another report under scrutiny is related to the ‘Sheeshmahal’ controversy, where taxpayer money was allegedly misused to refurbish the Chief Minister’s residence with luxury fittings.

These allegations have been central to political discourse in Delhi, especially after Kejriwal and his former deputy, Manish Sisodia, faced corruption charges in the run-up to the election.

AAP protests photo swap in CM’s office

Adding to the turmoil, AAP MLAs raised slogans of ‘Jai Bhim’ in the Assembly to protest the alleged removal of photographs of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh from the new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s office. The party claimed these had been replaced with an image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

However, the BJP dismissed these allegations as misinformation, releasing a video showing that Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh’s portraits had been shifted to the side walls, making way for those of Mahatma Gandhi, President Droupadi Murmu, and PM Modi.

Despite BJP’s clarification, Atishi vowed to continue her protest until the original placement of the photos was restored.

AAP MLAs stage sit-in protest

Following their suspension, the ousted MLAs, led by Atishi, staged a sit-in outside the Delhi Assembly, waving placards and chanting slogans against the new BJP government. AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha accused the ruling party of disrespecting Dr. Ambedkar, stating, “They hate Dr. Ambedkar, but the country will not accept this.”

As the political battle escalates, more intense protests are expected in the coming days, especially as discussions on the CAG report continue in the Assembly.

While addressing the gathering, PM Modi said, “Today in Assam, there is a great atmosphere filled with joy. The sweet fragrance of tea gardens fills the air, and who else can understand this better than a chaiwala?” His words resonated with the audience, drawing loud applause.

The event, aimed at showcasing Assam’s rich cultural diversity and tea legacy, saw the participation of over 60 foreign ambassadors who experienced firsthand the grandeur of Assam’s tea estates and cultural vibrancy.

Kaziranga National Park gets global spotlight

During his visit, the Prime Minister also emphasized the importance of Kaziranga National Park, famous for its one-horned rhinoceros. “I am the first Prime Minister to stop at Kaziranga and tell the world about its biodiversity,” he stated, underscoring efforts to bring global recognition to the park.

Additionally, he highlighted the Union government’s recognition of Assamese as a classical language, a long-awaited honor for the state’s linguistic heritage.

A grand cultural showcase: Jhumoir dance at Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium

A key highlight of the celebration was the spectacular Jhumoir dance performance by over 8,000 artists at Guwahati’s Sarusajai Stadium. Jhumoir, deeply rooted in Assam’s tea garden community, has been a symbol of joy and unity among workers since the early 19th century.

The event, also attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and other dignitaries, was part of the larger Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, aimed at promoting Assam’s economic and cultural potential globally. The state government also announced financial aid to support Jhumoir artists and tea estates in preserving this traditional art form.
