Patiala police arrested AAP MLA Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra in a rape case, a move that has sparked political turmoil in Punjab. Sanour legislator, however, allegedly managed to escape custody after opening fire at police personnel and attempting to run them over with an SUV, leaving one officer injured.
According to police sources, Pathanmajra and his associates opened fire while being escorted to a local police station and allegedly ran a constable over with their vehicle. Reports indicate that the MLA fled with the help of accomplices shortly after the confrontation.
The arrest came just a day after Pathanmajra openly criticised AAP’s Delhi leadership, accusing them of undermining Punjab’s elected representatives and ignoring local issues. He has consistently claimed that the party’s key decisions are being dictated from Delhi. His detention has now deepened rifts within the Punjab unit of the party.
Pathanmajra stated in a social media post that the case was politically motivated and connected to his former wife. He maintained that he was targeted for speaking out against his own party’s Delhi leadership. Meanwhile, his brother Hardev Singh alleged that the MLA was arrested under IPC Section 376 even though he had already been granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, describing the action as an attempt to suppress his voice.
Prior to his arrest, the MLA took to Facebook to call on supporters to gather outside the Patiala SSP’s office at the Mini Secretariat. He called on people to reach the protest site in tractors, trolleys, and cars, and asserted that he would not be silenced even if additional cases were filed against him. He further questioned whether AAP’s Delhi leadership intended to rule Punjabis, adding that even Congress and the BJP had not interfered to such an extent.
Pathanmajra recently criticised the Irrigation Department over alleged shortcomings in flood relief operations within his constituency. Soon after, his security cover was withdrawn and several police officers were transferred, actions his supporters viewed as retaliatory. He also accused the leadership of exploiting Punjab, remarking that they had looted Punjab more than Abdali and now sought to sell the state.
The incident has brought to light the growing unrest within AAP’s Punjab leadership. Several MLAs have in recent months voiced discontent over the centralised control of the party, with some facing disciplinary action or expulsion. With protests now being mobilised in Patiala, the confrontation is expected to escalate, raising questions not only about Pathanmajra’s legal troubles but also about governance and internal unity within AAP.
