A tender for the renovation of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s official residence, with a projected cost of Rs.60 lakh, has been cancelled. The city’s Public Works Department (PWD) informed the Delhi Government of the cancellation on Monday, citing “administrative reasons.” The PWD’s notification was issued three days after the tenders were originally scheduled to be opened.

According to reports, the Rs60 lakh tender has been issued for electrical work at the Chief Minister’s official residence, which includes the installation of 14 air conditioners, televisions valued at Rs9 lakh, and lighting fixtures worth another Rs6 lakh.

Gupta, a first-time MLA and the BJP’s unexpected choice for Chief Minister following its victory in the Delhi elections, waited nearly 100 days before being allotted an official bungalow. The residence, located on Raj Niwas Marg in Delhi’s Civil Lines area, was assigned to her in early June along with adjoining properties for the duration of her tenure.

Gupta has opted not to occupy the official residence previously used by former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, which the BJP had famously dubbed the “Sheeshmahal.” The property had become a focal point of the BJP’s attacks on the Aam Aadmi Party leader, with allegations that Kejriwal had spent crores of taxpayers’ money on extravagant renovations.

The reconstructed bungalow, spanning 40,000 square yards, was formed through the alleged unauthorised merger of four government-owned plots in Delhi’s Civil Lines area. It was Arvind Kejriwal’s official residence from 2015, when he vacated the premises in October 2024 after his resignation.

In October 2024, Central Public Works Department (CPWD) presented a report that brought to light “luxurious renovations” and the installation of “high-end appliances” at the then Delhi Chief Minister’s residence.

Arvind Kejriwal rejected the allegations, accusing the BJP of resorting to personal attacks to deflect from its own governance failures in Delhi. So far, neither Kejriwal nor the Aam Aadmi Party has commented on the delayed tender for the new Chief Minister’s residence.

The ‘sheeshmahal‘ allegations and the liquor policy corruption case also involving Mr Kejriwal became AAP’s downfall in the recent Delhi elections, with voter’s choosing BJP instead.

The order was passed as investigators sought additional time to question the two accused in the case linked to the blaze at the Anjuna-based nightclub.

Delhi High Court issues notice to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi in National Herald case

Delhi High Court has sought responses from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on the ED’s plea challenging a trial court order in the National Herald case.

The Delhi High Court has sought responses from Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi on a petition filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the National Herald case. The petition challenges a trial court order that refused to take cognisance of the agency’s prosecution complaint.

Justice Ravinder Dudeja issued notices to the Gandhis and other accused on the main petition, as well as on the ED’s application seeking a stay on the trial court’s December 16 order. The high court has listed the matter for further hearing on March 12, 2026.

The trial court had ruled that taking cognisance of the ED’s complaint was “impermissible in law” because the investigation was not based on a registered First Information Report (FIR). It observed that the prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was not maintainable in the absence of an FIR for a scheduled offence.

According to the order, the ED’s probe originated from a private complaint rather than an FIR. The court further noted that since cognisance was declined on a legal question, it was not necessary to examine the merits of the allegations at that stage.

The trial court also referred to the complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy and the summoning order issued in 2014, stating that despite these developments, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) did not register an FIR in relation to the alleged scheduled offence.

The ED has accused Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, and a private company, Young Indian, of conspiracy and money laundering. The agency has alleged that properties worth around Rs 2,000 crore belonging to Associated Journals Limited (AJL), which publishes the National Herald newspaper, were acquired through Young Indian.

The agency further claimed that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi held a majority 76 per cent shareholding in Young Indian, which allegedly took over AJL’s assets in exchange for a Rs 90 crore loan.
