Chhath Puja is a grand affair in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. During the festival, devotees observe nirjala fast for 48 hours and offer prayers to Lord Surya. It is considered one of the most sacred festivals among Biharis around the world.

Also known, as Chhath Parv, Chhath, Chhathi, Dala Puja, Surya Shashti, and Dala Chhath, the festival devotees break their fast by cooking and eating a range of simple, home-cooked but delicious dishes like chana dal (cooked Bengal gram), arwa chawal (boiled rice), lauki sabji and saag (bottle gourd curry and greens), and gur ka kheer (rice pudding cooked in an earthen pot).
