National Cancer Awareness Day is annually observed in India on November 7. The day is intended to spread awareness about the disease and make cancer treatment affordable and accessible to the masses.
Cancer is one of the deadliest diseases in India and across the world today. According to a study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) that came out in 2020, India witnessed as many as 1.16 million new cancer cases and 7,84,800 cancer deaths in 2018.

History of National Cancer Awareness day
It was 1975 when National Cancer Control Programme was first initiated with an intention to make cancer treatment easily accessible in the country. Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan first announced National Cancer Awareness Day in September 2014.

November 7 marks the birth anniversary of the noted scientist Madame Curie who is popular for her discovery of radium and polonium. She made a massive contribution to the fight against cancer.
