In a major intra party reshuffle just ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday, appointed 4 new state unit heads of Punjab, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
The BJP has given poll bound Telangana’s command to Union Minister G Kishan Reddy. Once served as the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee head, Sunil Jakhar will now the head the Punjab BJP unit.
The party named former Union Minister Daggubati Purandeswari as Andhra Pradesh’s state unit president and former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi as Jharkhand state unit president.
Minister Reddy has replaced the outgoing Telangana state BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who reportedly has failed to prove his leadership and maintain a good relationship with the new yet powerful entrants to the party.
Reddy is currently the Union Minister for Tourism, Culture and Development of India’s North Eastern region. An MP from Secunderabad, the Union Minister is known to be BJP’s strongman in Telangana.
With Reddy’s elevation as the state unit head, the BJP, which hopes to make its debut entry to rule the state, is aiming to strengthen its organisation and prepare itself for a tough fight in the state assembly polls later this year.
The newly appointed party’s Punjab state head Jakhar, who before joining BJP in May last year had been in different positions being a Congressman.
He was elected an MLA for three consecutive times from Punjab’s Abohar constituency, he was the Leader of Opposition in the Punjab assembly from 2012 to 2017 and also had won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-election in 2017.
The BJP had shown a quite poor performance in the last held 2022 Punjab elections, when the party won just 2 seats and the ruling Congress was also defeated by the Aam Aadmi Party which claimed power in the state elevating Bhagwant Mann as the Chief Minister.
Pre and post the Punjab elections, heavyweight Congress faces in the state had joined hands with the BJP including Congress’s former Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh, Jakhar, party’s youth face and spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill among others.
Out of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state, BJP had managed to win only 2 seats. Hence, with growing AAP’s presence in the state, the party is fore sighting to perform better in the 2024 polls. Reports said, under Jakhar’s leadership party can influence the Hindu vote bank of Punjab.
