The BJP-led alliance is on course to secure control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), ending over two decades of dominance by the Thackeray family, according to early trends from the civic body election results announced on Friday.

As counting continues, the BJP and the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena alliance is leading in 117 wards, crossing the majority mark of 114 in the 227-member BMC. The BJP alone is ahead in 88 wards, while the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena is leading in 29.

In contrast, the Thackeray cousins are trailing with leads in 70 wards. Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) is ahead in 64 wards, while Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) is leading in six.

High-stakes BMC election after long delay

The BMC elections were held after a nine-year gap, following a delay of nearly four years. A total of 1,700 candidates contested the Mumbai civic polls, making it one of the most closely watched municipal elections in the country.

With an annual budget exceeding Rs 74,400 crore, the BMC is India’s richest civic body and plays a crucial role in governing Mumbai’s infrastructure, health services, and urban development.

In the 2017 elections, the then-undivided Shiv Sena, which included the Eknath Shinde faction, had retained control of the civic body.

BJP leads across Maharashtra municipal corporations

The broader picture across 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra also favours the BJP-led front. Statewide trends show the BJP leading in 1,427 wards, while its ally, the Shinde-led Shiv Sena, is ahead in 403 wards.

The Congress is placed third with leads in 317 seats, with strong performances in areas such as Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Nagpur, and Kolhapur. Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is leading in 165 wards, followed by Shiv Sena (UBT) with 157.

Pune results reinforce BJP dominance

In Pune, another key battleground, the BJP has emerged as the clear frontrunner. The party is leading in 123 of 165 seats, while the combined factions of the NCP — led by Ajit Pawar and Sharad Pawar — are together ahead in 24 seats.

Voting details

Polling was held for 2,869 seats across 893 wards in the 29 civic bodies on Thursday. A voter turnout of 52.94% was recorded, with 15,931 candidates in the fray statewide.

Apart from Mumbai and Pune, counting is underway in municipal corporations including Navi Mumbai, Thane, Vasai-Virar, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nagpur, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Mira-Bhayandar, Bhiwandi-Nizampur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Kolhapur, and several others.

Congress, SP send mixed signals on AIMIM’s role ahead of 2027 Uttar Pradesh polls

Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders have responded differently to questions about AIMIM’s role ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, highlighting ongoing discussions over opposition strategy.

Differing responses from Congress and Samajwadi Party leaders have highlighted varying approaches within the Opposition camp regarding the possible role of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) in the run-up to the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

The discussion gained momentum after AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi launched his party’s campaign preparations for the 2027 elections from Bahraich and reiterated that his party is open to alliances, provided it is treated with respect and as an equal partner.

Different responses from Congress and SP

Reacting to questions about a possible understanding with AIMIM, Congress leader Imran Masood said any decision on alliances would be taken by the party leadership. He also stressed that there could be no compromise with communalism.

On the other hand, Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav adopted a more accommodating tone, stating that anyone capable of defeating the BJP would be welcome. His remarks were viewed as leaving the door open to broader anti-BJP political cooperation.

The differing responses have drawn attention as Opposition parties continue to assess their electoral strategies ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

AIMIM steps up preparations

AIMIM has begun expanding its campaign activity in Uttar Pradesh, with Owaisi launching the party’s preparations from Bahraich. The Hyderabad MP has indicated that AIMIM is willing to consider alliances but has maintained that any partnership must be based on mutual respect and equality.

The party is also working to strengthen its organisational presence in the state as it seeks a larger role in Uttar Pradesh politics ahead of the next Assembly election.

No formal alliance announced

Despite the ongoing discussion, no formal alliance or seat-sharing arrangement involving AIMIM and major Opposition parties has been announced so far.

With more than a year remaining before the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, political equations are expected to evolve as parties finalise their strategies and alliance plans.

Delhi weather update

A powerful dust storm swept across Delhi on Monday, bringing strong winds, reduced visibility and a sudden change in weather conditions across the national capital. Wind speeds reportedly reached 92 kmph in some areas as dark clouds and blowing dust engulfed parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert, warning residents about severe weather conditions and urging them to take necessary precautions.

The storm was accompanied by thunderstorms and rain in several parts of Delhi-NCR. The sudden weather activity provided relief from the prevailing heat but also raised concerns over potential disruptions to transport and power infrastructure. According to the weather department, strong surface winds and thunderstorms were expected to continue for several hours.

Red alert issued for severe weather

A red alert is issued when weather conditions pose a significant threat to life and property and require immediate action. The IMD advised people to remain indoors where possible, avoid weak structures, stay away from trees and electric poles, and refrain from taking shelter in open areas during the storm.

Weather officials said the intense conditions were linked to atmospheric instability over northwest India, influenced by weather systems affecting the region. Similar episodes of thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds have impacted Delhi-NCR in recent days.

The latest spell of severe weather is expected to bring down temperatures and offer relief from the heat. The IMD has also forecast further wet weather activity across parts of northwest India in the coming days.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed support for the peace agreement between the United States and Iran, anticipating that it would “restore peace” and “ensure freedom of navigation” in the region. The agreement aims to conclude their ongoing conflict and facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with a signing scheduled in Switzerland on June 19.

Though still in the framework phase, this initiative marks significant progress in a conflict that has resulted in thousands of casualties and disrupted global energy markets after the US-Israeli strikes on Iran in February.

The reopening of the Strait is expected to alleviate concerns in Asia, which previously depended on 90% of its oil supplies routed through this crucial passage.

In a statement on X, Modi highlighted the deal’s importance in addressing the economic chaos and loss of life caused by the conflict in West Asia. He expressed hope for the agreement’s implementation to bolster regional stability and facilitate commerce.

The United States and Iran reached this initial agreement on Monday, which includes extending a fragile ceasefire. Mediator Pakistan announced the deal, stating that both sides agreed to stop military operations and that meetings would occur to set the stage for technical talks.

US President Donald Trump confirmed the agreement and announced the cessation of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports, encouraging a resumption of oil transport.

The parties involved are still determining representation for the signing event. Iran’s deputy foreign minister confirmed the agreement but stated that implementation would begin only after the formal signing. The talks involved mediators from Qatar, contributing to the breakthrough. After the announcement of the deal, Israel’s national security minister went on record that Jerusalem will not hold back on its attacks on Lebanon. That would leave this agreement which took weeks in the works a hostage to Israeli intentions.
