The election of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been postponed once again. In such a situation, the election of mayor, deputy mayor and permanent members will now be held on the next date. It was told that the proceedings were adjourned due to uproar in the House.

Under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957, the election of the mayor and deputy mayor should be done in the first meeting of the municipal body. Although two months have passed since the municipal elections, but till now the city has not got a new mayor.

Earlier, the meeting of the MCD House was called twice on January 6 and January 24, but due to uproar by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) corporators, the presiding officer adjourned the proceedings without holding the election of the mayor. Gave.

AAP has fielded Shaili Oberoi and BJP has fielded Rekha Gupta as its candidate for the post of mayor. AAP and BJP had fielded Aale Mohammad Iqbal and Kamal Bagdi respectively for the post of Deputy Mayor. Along with these, six members of the Standing Committee of MCD are also likely to be elected today.

Tussle between BJP and AAP even before the meeting

On the other hand, Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has instructed its councilors to create ruckus like last time to disrupt the mayor’s election.

Sisodia tweeted that BJP has instructed its councilors not to allow the mayor’s election to be held again in the MCD meeting on Monday. The BJP councilors have been told to create ruckus on some pretext as soon as the house starts. The presiding officer will again adjourn the House indefinitely like last time. The Lieutenant Governor will again give the date after 20 days.

Countering this, BJP’s Delhi unit’s working president Virendra Sachdeva said that if the House is adjourned on Monday, Kejriwal will be responsible for it.

The BJP leader said that AAP is not confident of its majority and has instructed its councilors to adjourn the House by creating ruckus on any issue. If the House is adjourned even today, Arvind Kejriwal will be responsible for it.

AAP emerged as the single largest party with 134 councilors in the MCD elections, while the BJP won 104 seats. The Congress had won nine seats.

In response, Mann suggested that the blasts could be part of a larger political strategy. His remarks triggered a strong backlash, with opposition parties accusing him of politicising a serious security issue.

Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Lok Bhawan in Guwahati. The Governor accepted the resignation and asked him to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister until the new government takes charge.

The resignation comes after the NDA’s strong electoral performance, where the alliance won a clear majority in the 126-member Assembly, ensuring its return to power for another term.

Oath ceremony expected after May 11

Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation, Sarma said the swearing-in ceremony for the new government is likely to be held after May 11.

Sources suggest that central observers, including senior BJP leaders, are expected to arrive shortly to oversee the selection of the legislature party leader. The newly elected MLAs will then decide on the next Chief Minister.

Despite the formal resignation, party sources indicate that Sarma is likely to continue in the role for another term, given the BJP’s strong mandate in the state.

The move marks the beginning of the government formation process in Assam following the election results declared earlier this week.
