Elattuvalapil Sreedharan, popularly known as the Metro man, is all set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party. The announcement was made by Kerala state party president K. Surendran at a conference on Thursday.

The 88-year-old will formally join the party during the Vijay Yatra, a rath yatra in Kerala. Ahead of the Kerala Assembly elections, the BJP has launched a rath yatra which is due to start on Sunday.

Sreedharan said he has decided to join the BJP, just official formalities remain. He said he believes in the issues the party is raising and against the blind opposition by political parties nationally.

When asked if there is a possibility of him contesting the election, Sreedharan said he is open to contest elections if the party wants.

Sreedharan retired as chief of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in 2011. The engineer was behind the expansive and ambitious metro rail project in Delhi, which while bringing the city together ended up taking a heavy, irreplaceable toll on the city’s famed greenery. He was also involved in other metro projects in the country such as in Jaipur, Lucknow and Kochi.

On the decision to join politics, he said it’s not a sudden decision. He has been in Kerala for the past decade and wanted to use his time and experience in making a difference.

Sreedharan’s entry into the ruling BJP comes at a time when the party faces an uphill fight against the Communist Party of India (Marxist), led by CM Pinarayi Vijayan, in the upcoming polls.

The retired Delhi Metro chief came into the spotlight when he worked on restoring the Pamban bridge in Tamil Nadu, the link between Rameswaram and the mainland. The bridge was damaged by a cyclone. He then was known for his stewardship of the Konkan Railway project.

He has been conferred several honours, including the country’s fourth highest civilian award Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
