Mudda discusses various thoughts on the subject
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tribute to SardarVallabhbhai Patel on his 143rd birth anniversary by dedicating his 182-metrehigh “Statue of Unity” at Sadhu Bet Island, Gujarat. It occupies over 20,000 square metres and is surrounded by a 12 square km artificial lake.
While addressing a public meeting on the occasion, PM Modi said, “The Statue of Unity is an answer to all those who question the existence of India. The height of the statue is to remind the youth that the future of the country will be as huge as this. It is also symbolic of our engineering and technology affordability.”
He said that credit of uniting India goes to SardarVallabhbhai Patel saying, “Had Sardar Patel not united the country, we would need visas to see lions or pay homage at Somnath or view the Charminar in Hyderabad. Patel converted India’s diversity into its biggest strength. The country is today following the path shown by Patel and is moving towards becoming the world’s greatest economic and strategic power.”
Built at a cost of Rs 2,989 crores, the project took 42 months to be completed. Aside from the landmark statue, there are five other related sites whichhave been constructed: the walkway, the ticket counter, the food court, the four-lane approach highway, and the ‘Shrestha Bharat Bhavan’, a 52-room three-star lodging facility for the visitors.
The birth anniversary of SardarPatel, also known as India’s Iron Man, or the LauhPurush, is being observed as RashtriyaEktaDiwas or the National Unity Day since 2014, the year the present dispensation came to power.
Apart from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, MP Governor Anandiben Patel and BJP president Amit Shah were also present.
APN chose the issue to be discussed in its afternoon Mudda show on Wednesday. The participants in the debate were Dr VijayKhaira, leader, BJP, Ajay Arora, spokesperson of Congress party, DrSeema Malik, leader, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Abdul Hafeez Gandhi, spokesperson of Samajwadi Party (SP), and Govind Pant Raju, the Consulting Editor at APN. Akshay Singh anchored the show.
Dr Vijay Khairasaid that SardarPatel and SubhasChandra Bose were no less important than Jawaharlal Nehru on any account. No schemes were named after these important personalities during Congress rule. Narendra Modi dreamed this project while he was Chief Minister of Gujarat which is now fulfilled while he is ruling the country.
Ajay Arorasaid that Congress believes in unity of people of various sections while BJP is a divisive party. The inauguration of Statue of Unity has become a BJP ceremony. The inauguration has become a political stunt. Sardar Patel should be respected by one and all. However, BJP is diverting all issues for its own political gain, he said.
Seema Malik also alleged that SardarPatel was being appropriated by the BJP. Today’s inauguration of the Statue of Unity has become a BJP function, rather than a national occasion. She said that Patel should be honored with several welfare schemes, including establishing of hospitals in his name.
The NCP leader said that we should leave statue-based politics behind and adopt development as a rule. She suggested the government attend to the needs of the countrymen and fulfill its commitments.
Gandhi, the spokesperson of Samajwadi Party, said that dedicating the Statue of Unity is a BJP political stunt. He suggested constructing his statue will not serve the purpose of people’s welfare. Sardar Patel was the son of a farmer, who always fought for their rights. Respect to his ideology was also important, he said.
He said that the respect and dignity of Sardar Patel cannot be erased. The real respect to his persona would be paid by following his ideology, he held.
Summing up the debate, Raju said that BJP might have thought of getting political mileage by dedicating the highest statue in Sardar Patel’s honour. He said that BJP will definitely gain political benefitsfrom this act.
