Punjab’s last ray of hope in their match against Maharashtra dimmed when Anmolpreet Singh was dismissed by Maharashtra’s standout performer, Arshin Kulkarni. Kulkarni entered the attack in the 32nd over and bowled Anmolpreet, denying him a half-century and bringing Punjab to their seventh wicket down.

Earlier in the match, Rajnish Gurbani, alongside PC Dadha and Mukesh Choudhary, had already struck when Anmol Malhotra was dismissed in the 23rd over. Anmolpreet Singh was the lone established batter left, needing approximately 200 more runs for Punjab to clinch victory.

Mukesh Choudhary wreaked havoc on Punjab’s top order, first removing Abhishek Sharma, then Nehal Wadhera, leaving Punjab in a precarious position at three wickets down. He also bowled Prabhsimran Singh in the fourth over, granting Maharashtra a crucial breakthrough, after which Anmolpreet came to the crease.

Punjab began their innings with a partnership of Prabhsimran Singh and Abhishek Sharma at the top, while Maharashtra’s attack was led by Rajnish Gurbani and Mukesh Choudhary from opposite ends.

Despite their quarter-final elimination from the Vijay Hazare Trophy at the hands of Maharashtra, Punjab pacer Arshdeep Singh had an outstanding campaign. He capped it off with his highest professional score on Saturday. Having played only a few 50-over matches and eight ODIs, Arshdeep bolstered his chances for a spot on India’s Champions Trophy squad, set to begin in February. On Saturday, he impressed with his swing and accuracy, taking the wicket of Maharashtra captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and finishing with two more scalps in his nine-over spell.

Arshdeep concluded the tournament with an impressive tally of 20 wickets in seven innings, making him the first bowler from Punjab to pick up 20 wickets in a single Vijay Hazare Trophy season and placing him at the top of the bowling charts.

Meanwhile, Satyajeet Bachhav (20 not out off 15 balls) and Nikhil Naik (52 not out off 29 balls) contributed significantly by scoring 59 runs in the last five overs, leading Maharashtra to a total of 275 runs in their first innings of the quarter-final against Punjab.

Arshin Kulkarni reached his well-deserved century in the 41st over but lost his wicket shortly after while attempting to accelerate. Arshdeep was responsible for this pivotal dismissal. Nikhil Naik and Satyajeet Bachhav continued to guide Maharashtra to a competitive total.

Maharashtra crossed the 150-run mark in the 32nd over, with both Arshin Kulkarni and Ankit Bawne looking solid as they added crucial runs but needed to increase their scoring rate. Kulkarni reached his half-century at a strike rate below 100, while Ankit Bawne quickly followed suit. The pair combined for over 100 runs for the third wicket, aiming to quicken the pace of their innings.

The match took place at the newly inaugurated Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara, with Punjab and Maharashtra vying for a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 on January 11. The Abhishek Sharma-led Punjab finished second in Group C with 24 points, while Maharashtra topped their group, also accumulating 24 points over seven games. In quarter-final 4, Karnataka faced Baroda for a chance to secure a semi-final position.

India beat New Zealand by four wickets as KL Rahul holds nerve after Kohli’s near-miss ton

India registered a hard-fought four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI in Vadodara on Sunday, with KL Rahul holding his nerve in the final overs after Virat Kohli narrowly missed out on a landmark century.

Chasing a target of 301, India appeared firmly in control for most of the innings, led by Kohli’s composed 93 off 91 balls. The former India captain struck eight fours and a six, anchoring the chase before falling seven runs short of what would have been his 85th international hundred.

Kohli’s dismissal triggered a brief collapse, allowing New Zealand back into the contest. However, Rahul remained calm under pressure, scoring an unbeaten 29 off 21 balls. His decisive penultimate over, featuring two boundaries and a six, ensured India crossed the line with six balls to spare.

Earlier, Shubman Gill contributed 56 while Shreyas Iyer looked set for a half-century before being bowled for 49. Harshit Rana also played a crucial cameo, adding 29 off 23 balls at a tense stage of the chase.

Despite disciplined spells from the New Zealand bowlers, India reached 306 for 6 in 49 overs to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

New Zealand innings

Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive 300 for 8. Daryl Mitchell led the charge with a counter-attacking 84 off 71 balls after early pressure from India’s pace attack. Henry Nicholls and Devon Conway also chipped in with half-centuries to provide stability to the innings.

India’s bowlers managed to pull things back at the death, preventing the visitors from pushing beyond the 300-run mark.

Key milestone and award

During his innings, Kohli became the fastest player to reach 28,000 international runs, achieving the milestone in his 624th innings, surpassing the previous record held by Sachin Tendulkar.

Despite missing out on a century, Kohli was named Player of the Match for his decisive contribution in the chase.

The second ODI of the series will be played on January 14.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru opened their Women’s Premier League 2026 campaign with a dramatic three-wicket win over defending champions Mumbai Indians, riding on a sensational all-round performance from Nadine de Klerk in Navi Mumbai on Friday.

Opting to bowl first, RCB restricted Mumbai Indians to 154 for 6 in 20 overs, with de Klerk emerging as the standout performer. The South African all-rounder returned figures of 4 for 26, repeatedly breaking partnerships and preventing MI from building momentum.

Mumbai had found themselves in early trouble after being reduced to 67 for 4 in the 11th over. Gunalan Kamalini top-scored with 32 at the top, while captain Harmanpreet Kaur made 20. The innings was revived by Sajeevan Sajana, who played a fluent knock of 45 off 25 balls, hitting seven fours and a six. She added 82 runs for the fifth wicket with Nicola Carey, who contributed 40, helping MI post a competitive total.

Lauren Bell and Shreyanka Patil picked up one wicket each for RCB, while the match began with Bell delivering a maiden over that set the tone for the bowling effort.

RCB stumble before de Klerk’s rescue act

Chasing 155, RCB got off to a brisk start through Smriti Mandhana and Grace Harris, who scored 18 and 25 respectively. The opening pair attacked early, but both fell in quick succession, triggering a collapse that saw RCB slip from 47 for 2 to 65 for 5 within a few overs.

Richa Ghosh, Dayalan Hemalatha and Radha Yadav departed cheaply, leaving RCB in deep trouble at 75 for 5 halfway through the chase. With wickets falling around her, de Klerk held firm, finding support briefly from Arundhati Reddy, who scored 20.

Last-over drama seals RCB victory

The match went down to the final over with RCB needing 18 runs and three wickets in hand. De Klerk rose to the occasion, striking a six and a four off the third and fourth deliveries before hammering another six off the penultimate ball. She then drove the final delivery for a four to complete an unbeaten 63 off 44 balls, sealing a memorable win for RCB.

RCB finished on 157 for 7, with Prema Rawat remaining not out on 8. For Mumbai Indians, Nicola Carey and Amelia Kerr claimed two wickets each, while Nat Sciver-Brunt, Shabnim Ismail and Amanjot Kaur took one apiece.

The WPL 2026 season thus began with a high-octane contest, highlighted by Nadine de Klerk’s match-winning performance with both bat and ball.

Cracks emerge in Bangladesh Cricket Board over T20 World Cup venue dispute with ICC

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has sent a second communication to the ICC citing security concerns over travelling to India for the T20 World Cup, even as divisions emerge within the board.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has sent a second formal communication to the International Cricket Council (ICC), outlining specific security concerns related to travelling to India for the upcoming T20 World Cup, according to media reports.

The renewed correspondence comes amid growing internal differences within the BCB over whether Bangladesh should participate in the tournament in India or push for a venue change to Sri Lanka. The global event is scheduled to begin on February 7, with Bangladesh slated to play three matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai.

According to a source close to the board, the latest letter was sent after discussions between the BCB and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul. The ICC had sought clarity on the nature of Bangladesh’s security apprehensions, prompting the board to detail its concerns in the second communication.

However, the contents of the letter have not been made public.

Board divided over travel to India

Media reports indicate that the Bangladesh Cricket Board itself remains split on the issue. One section of the board supports Asif Nazrul’s firm position against travelling to India, while another group prefers continued dialogue with the ICC and Indian authorities.

The latter faction is said to be advocating for enhanced and foolproof security arrangements for the Bangladesh team throughout its stay in India, rather than an outright refusal to participate.

Nazrul, who has previously expressed strong views against India, is believed to have taken a tougher stance than the board’s traditionally cooperative approach with Indian cricket authorities.

Government backs demand for venue change

Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain has meanwhile confirmed that the national team will not travel to India for the World Cup, citing safety concerns. He said the government supports the sports adviser’s demand that Bangladesh’s matches be relocated to Sri Lanka, a co-host of the tournament.

“We will certainly play outside India,” Hossain was quoted as saying, adding that the safety of players and supporters travelling to India must be taken into account.

The standoff follows the release of Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL earlier, after Indian cricket authorities cited unspecified “developments all around.” That decision reportedly came in the backdrop of incidents involving attacks on minorities in Bangladesh.

ICC yet to decide on venue shift

As of now, the ICC has not indicated whether it will move Bangladesh’s matches from Kolkata and Mumbai to Colombo. However, the BCB has maintained that the global body has shown willingness to engage with the board to assess the security concerns raised.

With the tournament approaching, uncertainty continues to surround Bangladesh’s participation in matches scheduled to be held in India.
