Asia Cup

The host nation Pakistan’s name missing on the jerseys of the competing teams caused controversy surrounding the Asia Cup 2023. On August 30, Pakistan and Nepal squared off in Multan to start the competition. Even though Pakistan defeated the underdogs handily, former cricketers and spectators were quick to notice the Asia Cup badge on the right side of the jerseys.

Without the name of the host country, it merely featured the Asia Cup emblem. The identical observation was made during Bangladesh and Sri Lanka’s Group B encounter. The name of the host country was also gone from their jerseys.

Fans expressed their outrage after seeing images of the jerseys of India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh go viral. Some people have even brought up the fact that Sri Lanka’s name appeared below the Asia Cup emblem in the most recent season even though the competition was held in UAE because the former were the original hosts.

Despite the event being played in a hybrid format this year, Pakistan is the official host; Sri Lanka is the other host, as a result of India’s objections about visiting Pakistan.

Rashid Latif, Mohsin Khan, and other former Pakistani cricketers criticised PCB and Asia Cricket Council (ACC) for failing to demand that the team jerseys be replaced. The situation was considered unacceptable by Latif.

This is unacceptable, and since the Asia Cup is their property, the Asian Cricket Council must explain this oversight, he said.

For its part, PCB tried to downplay the controversy by claiming that the ACC determined after the 2017 Asia Cup that the host nation’s name will not be used with the Asia Cup logo in future editions. However, former Pakistani players and supporters were not having any of it.

Even if the ACC had made such a decision, some have questioned why the PCB approved it given that Pakistan was hosting a multi-team event for the first time in 15 years.

Is CSK’s style of play outdated? Fleming fires back at reporters, Ruturaj says just 50 runs

CSK’s Stephen Fleming snaps at a journalist calling their game outdated, while Ruturaj Gaikwad’s “just 50 runs” remark leaves fans confused.

Stephen Fleming, Ruturaj Gaikwad, CSK’s outdated style, CSK Chepauk loss,

By Mohammad Javed Rasheedi

It was anything but a calm post-match press conference after Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) 50-run defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Chepauk on Friday. When a journalist raised a pointed question about CSK’s approach being outdated,” the CSK head coach Stephen Fleming didn’t hold back.

In a post match conference, the journalist cited CSK’s slow chase of 156 in the first game and a score of 146 against RCB, asking Fleming if the team’s conservative batting approach was losing relevance in modern T20 cricket. Fleming, visibly annoyed, shot back:

The question that sparked it all?

“In the first game, you chased 156 in almost 20 overs. Today, you scored 146. I know this is your way of playing cricket, but do you think it’s kind of getting outdated?”

That didn’t go well with Fleming. His response? Sharp and direct: “What do you mean by my way of playing? We’ve got firepower all the way through. Just because we don’t swing from ball one… just wait till the end, see who wins. It is a positive brand of cricket. Don’t discount us.”

And when the journalist tried to clarify, Fleming shut it down: “You sort of are. Silly question.”

Chepauk advantage?

Interestingly, the loss was CSK’s first of the IPL 2025 season, and RCB’s first win at Chepauk since 2008. But Fleming says there’s no such thing as home advantage anymore. “We’ve told you for years — we can’t read these wickets. It’s not the Chepauk of old. We’re trying to figure it out every single game,” the CSK head coach admitted.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s surprising take on loss

The CSK skipper believed 170 was a par score and blamed fielding errors for the defeat. “We dropped catches, gave away boundaries. The wicket wasn’t easy to bat on. But it wasn’t a huge loss… just 50 runs,” Gaikwad said.

Wait, just 50 runs?

That comment raised a few eyebrows, especially in the context of T20, where a 50-run margin is quite significant. Fans online were quick to call out the casual tone.

So, is CSK really outdated? Or just warming up the vintage engine?

One loss doesn’t define CSK — but the questions around their approach and consistency may linger. Are they ready to bounce back? Only time (and the next match) will tell. But if you’re planning to question Stephen Fleming again — maybe bring a helmet.

What’s next for CSK?

As they prepare to travel to Guwahati for their next match, Gaikwad said the focus is clear: “We need major improvement in fielding. It’s about turning up mentally strong and fixing the areas we’re lacking in.”

Nicholas Pooran has earned Harbhajan Singh’s vote as the best T20 batter right now, ahead of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, after a fiery IPL 2025 start.

India spin legend Harbhajan Singh, now part of the IPL 2025 commentary panel, has weighed in on one of T20 cricket’s most debatable questions—who is the best T20 batter right now?

Is it Australia’s in-form explosive opener Travis Head, India’s rising star Abhishek Sharma, or the ultra-aggressive Jake Fraser-McGurk? No, says Harbhajan.

His pick? Nicholas Pooran, the Trinadidan tsunami.

The former off-spinner declared his choice on social media after Nicholas Pooran’s latest blitz for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2025. “Currently Nicholas Pooran is the best player of T20 format. Period!” he posted on X.

Presenting the batter’s T20 stats, Harbhajan declared Pooran as the best T20 player in the world right now, following his electrifying start to IPL 2025 with LSG.

Continuing his red-hot form, the 29-year-old Trinadadian has smashed 145 runs in just two matches, including a 26-ball 70 against Sunrisers Hyderabad and a 75 from 30 balls vs Delhi Capitals. He currently holds the Orange Cap, with a strike rate of 258.92 and average of 72.50.

After his destructive knock against SRH, Nicholas Pooran became the second player after KL Rahul to score over 1000 runs for LSG. He reached the milestone in just 31 matches, averaging 45.54 at a destructive strike rate of 184.53.

Known for his effortless power-hitting, Pooran holds the record for the most IPL fifties scored in under 20 balls—doing so four times, more than any other player. He recently smashed an 18-ball half-century, second-fastest for LSG, only behind his own 15-ball effort from IPL 2023.

When it comes to speed, Pooran leads again—holding the record for most IPL fifties in under 20 balls (4). Travis Head and Fraser-McGurk have managed this feat three times each.

In a tournament full of hard-hitters, Pooran isn’t just keeping pace—he’s setting it.

Heinrich Klaasen defends SRH batting depth after LSG defeat, says Sunrisers not reliant on Travishek

After SRH’s loss to LSG, Heinrich Klaasen refuted claims of overdependence on the opening duo Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, stressing the team’s all-round batting strength.

Heinrich Klaasen, Travishek, Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Klassen on SRH batting depth

Following Sunrisers Hyderabad’s five-wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2025, SRH’s destructive wicket-keeper batsman Heinrich Klaasen has defended team’s batting depth, saying team doesn’t rely solely on Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma duo.

Travishek, a standout pair from SRH’s IPL 2024 campaign with 736 runs across 16 innings, couldn’t deliver as expected on March 27. Abhishek fell early in the third over, and although Head managed a quick 47 off 28 balls, SRH’s total of 190 fell short on a batting-friendly Hyderabad pitch.

Dismissing the team’s overdependence on Travishek, Klassen acknowledged that Travishek’s aggressive starts put early pressure on opponents, easing the job for the middle order.

“Not at all,” Klaasen said during the post-match press conference. “If we look at our batting lineup, we are destructive till batter No.8. We don’t need Travis and Abhishek to come off every time. We’re good enough to score without them as well,” he said.

“You will never have a season where both of them will score more than 1000 runs. It’s the way we play—a bit on the riskier side,” Klaasen added.

SRH, who batted first, were restricted to 190 despite good intent shown early on. Klaasen felt the score was underwhelming considering the surface.

“We didn’t score enough runs. 210-220 was par score. One or two unlucky dismissals hurt us. One was caught down the leg side, another was deflected onto the stumps off the bowler’s hand. But that’s part of the game,” he said.

The wicketkeeper-batter remains confident in SRH’s depth and ability to recover from setbacks. The team is set to take on Delhi Capitals in their next match on March 30 in Vizag.
