INDW vs AUSW

The first ever Commonwealth Games women’s cricket final: India had to face defeat after failing to chase down the 162 run target put up by the Team Australia at the Edgbaston Stadium. Australia women’s cricket team, who are also the defending world champions in the 20-overs and 50-overs formats, were able to contain the Indian side in the final.

The Indian women’s cricket team beat England by 4 runs to qualify into the Commonwealth Games cricket finals. India had defeated England in a remarkable manner as the Indian Vice Captain Smriti Mandhana, outshined with her innings of more than 60 runs to inspire India to win the game, while breaking her own record of fastest half century by a women cricketer.

In the finals, the Australian side chose to bat first after winning the toss and managed to put up a total of 162 for the Indian side to chase. The target of 162 runs seemed achievable initially for the Indian front but as the game escalated; the chase down window kept narrowing down leaving India 11 runs short.

Australia won by 9 runs, clinching the gold over India. The Indian team, however, did have a great run in the CWG 2022 campaign; specially the Indian opener Smriti Mandhana, playing fiercely and consistently throughout. Unfortunately, Smriti’s spell didn’t work in the finals as the Indian women’s cricket team saw her retreat back to the pavilion after tallying 16 runs in 1.5 overs.

The Indian women’s cricket team have been quite unfortunate in their past campaigns’ finals as they lost against Australia in the world cup finals earlier this year. They have failed to step up numerous times in their past Campaigns.

There have been many skippers who have been inspiring the Indian women’s cricket team to push further and Smriti Mandhana is on the top of the list. Smriti raised many eyebrows with her excellent performance in the Commonwealth Games campaign while also being a consistent performer for team India in the prior campaigns of the Indian National women’s team.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are facing a potentially devastating blow ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. Venkatesh Iyer, the star all-rounder who commanded a staggering ₹23.75 crore at the recent mega-auction, has suffered a serious injury during a Ranji Trophy match. The incident occurred while playing for Madhya Pradesh against Kerala at the Greenfield Stadium.

While batting at number six, Iyer twisted his right ankle, bringing a premature end to his innings after just three balls faced. The injury appeared severe, forcing him to immediately retire hurt. Eyewitnesses described Iyer collapsing on the pitch in pain, requiring immediate attention from the team physio.

He subsequently left the field with the physio’s support, a stark image that sent ripples of concern through the KKR fanbase. Later, he was seen in the dugout, wearing a single pad and resting his injured leg, further emphasizing the gravity of the situation.

The timing of the injury couldn’t be worse. Iyer was instrumental in KKR’s IPL 2024 title victory, delivering a stellar performance with 370 runs in 15 matches (13 innings). His impressive average of 46.25 and a remarkable strike rate of 158.79, punctuated by four fifties, solidified his position as a key player within the team.

His absence in the upcoming season would be a significant blow to KKR’s campaign, potentially disrupting their carefully crafted strategies and team dynamics. The acquisition of Iyer himself was a high-stakes gamble.

Released by KKR after the 2024 season, he was unexpectedly snapped up in a fierce bidding war against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The ₹23.75 crore investment underscores the franchise’s belief in his abilities and their willingness to go to extreme lengths to secure his services.

Now, the team finds itself nervously awaiting a prognosis on his injury, hoping for a speedy recovery that would allow this prized asset to return to the field. The extent of the injury and the subsequent recovery timeline remain uncertain, leaving KKR fans and management alike in a state of anxious anticipation.

Australian Open: Aryna Sabalenka defeats Paula Badosa to reach third straight final

The Serbian champion, who required a medical timeout and painkillers during the match, even admitted to contemplating retirement at one point.

Aryna Sabalenka continued her dominance at the Australian Open, securing her place in a third consecutive final with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory over Paula Badosa. This win positions the world No. 1 just one match away from a historic three-peat, a feat unmatched in women’s singles at Melbourne Park since Martina Hingis’ triumph from 1997 to 1999.

Badosa, who will return to the WTA Top 10 following her impressive semifinal showing, began the match strongly, holding a commanding 2-0, 40-0 lead. However, a rain delay and the subsequent roof closure at Rod Laver Arena disrupted her rhythm. Sabalenka capitalized on the interruption, swiftly regaining parity and reeling off four consecutive games to clinch the first set.

The Belarusian’s dominance intensified in the second set. She significantly improved her first-serve win percentage, leaping from 69% in the first set to an impressive 90% (9/10) in the second. Two further breaks of Badosa’s serve, coupled with conceding only a single break point herself, sealed the victory in a swift 1 hour and 23 minutes.

This win extends Sabalenka’s head-to-head record against Badosa to 6-2, including both of their Grand Slam encounters and stretches her Australian Open winning streak to an astonishing 20 consecutive matches. Her last defeat in Melbourne came against Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round of the 2022 tournament. Sabalenka now awaits the winner of the semifinal clash between Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys, poised to potentially etch her name into Australian Open history.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Novak Djokovic’s participation in the semifinals remains shrouded in uncertainty. A thigh injury sustained during his gruelling three-hour, 37-minute quarterfinal battle against Carlos Alcaraz has cast doubt over his ability to compete. The Serbian champion, who required a medical timeout and painkillers during the match, even admitted to contemplating retirement at one point.

Despite his eventual victory and a subsequent statement expressing his determination to continue, Djokovic’s absence from a scheduled practice session fueled speculation regarding the severity of his injury. While he secured a hard-fought win, questions about the true extent of his injury persist, adding another layer of intrigue to his upcoming semifinal against Alexander Zverev.
