In their ODI World Cup 2023 come across against South Africa, Pakistan was shockingly defeated by one wicket on Friday. With the Proteas chasing 271, Pakistan tried their hardest to limit them with the bowl, but Aiden Markram’s 91-run innings and Keshav Maharaj’s boundary saw them through to victory in the 48th over.
In addition to this exciting chase, Tabraiz Shamsi’s match garnered significant attention when, with eight needed, fast bowler Haris Rauf was called off by the umpire after a close leg-before appeal. It happened on the last ball of the 46th over.
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh was frank in his assessment of the circumstances, claiming that poor umpiring ultimately cost Pakistan this game.
Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter Harbhajan said, bad umpiring and bad rules cost Pakistan this game. He also said, ICC should change this rule. If the ball is hitting the stump that’s out whether umpire gave out or not out doesn’t matter. Otherwise what is the use of technology???, the former cricketer added.
However, former South Africa captain Graeme Smith was amused by Harbhajan’s remarks, as he instantly brought up Rassie Van Der Dussen’s LBW dismissal.
Graeme also tweeted that he understand his sentiment over the umpire’s call, but Rassie and South Africa may also feel the same way.
Usama Mir’s delivery struck Rassie Van Der Dussen on the pads during the 19th over, resulting in his declaration as Leg Before Winning. Rassie was forced to leave after the umpire’s call, even though the Proteas batsman had won the DRS.
In addition, Harbhajan expressed his opinion on van der Dussen’s ejection, stating that the batter was still in the game. The former spinner for India continued, saying that the umpire was saved by technology, not the batsman. He was not out according to me .. but tech was there to give him out as umpire gave him out.. otherwise umpire would hv looked bad for wrong decision.. they saved the umpire there not the player who could have won the game easily for SA, Harbhajan said.
With five wins from six games, South Africa now leads the league table with ten points after the victory.
Pakistan, on the other hand, lost four consecutive after winning the first two games of the competition.
