The Indian team will not go to Pakistan to play the Asia Cup tournament (16th edition) next year, this was confirmed by the chairman of the Asian Cricket Council, Jay Shah on Tuesday. He has said that the Asia Cup 2023 will be played at a neutral venue.
In such a situation, the Pakistan Cricket Board has got a big setback. After the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of BCCI, Jay Shah talked about the removal of Pakistan as the host. Jay Shah said that Asia Cup 2023 will be played on a neutral venue rather than Pakistan.
He further added that the Indian government has decided not to allow Indian team to go to Pakistan. Hence, for the 2023 Asia Cup, it has been decided that the tournament will be held at a neutral venue. It was earlier revealed in media reports that BCCI was ready to send Team India to Pakistan.
Jay Shah who is also the BCCI secretary has now denied the news. Earlier it was decided that next year the Asia Cup would be held in Pakistan, but now the hosting has been snatched from Pakistan.
For the unversed, the next Asia Cup tournament will be played in the ODI format. Previous month the Asia Cup 2022 was held in T20 format in Dubai and Sri Lanka won the titled for the sixth time.
On the other hand, Champions Trophy is also making a comeback from 2025. This tournament will be played in 2025 for the first time after 2017. However, Jay Shah said that the venue for the 2025 Champions Trophy is still to be decided. He also added that BCCI aims at benefiting the domestic players.
India and Pakistan have not played any bilateral series for nine years. The last T20 and ODI series between the two were played in December 2012. The T20 series was drawn 1-1, while the ODI series was won by Pakistan 2-1. At the same time, both have not faced each other in the Test series since the 2007-08 season.
Moreover, India has not visited Pakistan since the 2008 Mumbai terror attack. At the same time, this relationship had worsened after the continuous ceasefire violations on the Line of Control and after the Pulwama attack in February 2019. Due to the tense political ties between the two neighboring countries, the two teams face each other only at ICC and Asian Cricket events and that too at neutral events.
