With the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season set to kick off on March 22, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), led by Shah Rukh Khan, have officially appointed Ajinkya Rahane as their new captain. Venkatesh Iyer will serve as the vice-captain. KKR, the winners of IPL 2024, will begin their title defense against Rajat Patidar’s Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens, Kolkata.
KKR’s CEO, Venky Mysore, expressed enthusiasm about having Rahane at the helm, commenting on his leadership experience and maturity. He also highlighted Venkatesh Iyer’s significant contributions to the franchise and his leadership potential, stating their confidence in the duo’s capability to lead the team effectively.
The official announcement was complemented by a promotional poster on KKR’s X account, featuring Rahane with the tagline, “𝕂night. 𝕂aptain. ℝahane.” In response to his appointment, Rahane took to X to express his excitement, remarking, “Honored and excited to lead @KKRiders in the upcoming IPL season! Looking forward to the challenge and giving it our all. Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo 💪🔥 #IPL2025.”
In another significant development, KKR announced they would sport a Golden Badge on their jerseys this season, becoming the first team in IPL history to do so.
Venkatesh Iyer, recently named vice-captain, emerged as a highly sought-after player during the IPL 2025 mega auction, being purchased for ₹23.75 crore, making him the third-most expensive buy after Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant. Having joined KKR in 2020, Venkatesh quickly made his mark, scoring 350 runs in his debut season and accumulating 1,326 runs across 51 matches.
In the IPL 2025 auction, KKR retained key players, including Rinku Singh and Sunil Narine, while also acquiring new talents, including Anrich Nortje, Quinton de Kock, and Umran Malik. They successfully brought back Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Vaibhav Arora, expanding their squad with promising prospects.
KKR’s strategic planning looks poised to blend experience with emerging talent as they embark on their IPL title defense.
