India showcased their spin dominance in the Champions Trophy 2025 as they secured a comprehensive 44-run victory over New Zealand, defending a modest total of 249/9. The match, held at Dubai International Stadium, saw spinners wreak havoc, with Varun Chakravarthy leading the attack with a stunning five-wicket haul. However, the game was not devoid of controversy, as Ravindra Jadeja’s on-field appeal and celebration drew criticism from commentator Simon Doull.
Jadeja’s appeal sparks debate
During the 33rd over, Ravindra Jadeja trapped Tom Latham LBW with a well-flighted delivery. Latham, attempting a reverse sweep, misjudged the line, and the ball struck his thigh, leading to a successful appeal. However, Jadeja ran down the centre of the pitch while appealing and celebrating, which irked former New Zealand cricketer and commentator Simon Doull.
“Have a look at that. You can’t be doing that. (It) should’ve come with a warning,” Doull remarked, criticizing Jadeja for his on-field conduct.
Generally, stepping onto the pitch unnecessarily can result in warnings from the umpires, as it may damage the playing surface for the bowlers.
India’s innings: Iyer and Axar Patel lead the recovery
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, New Zealand made early inroads, reducing India to 30/3. However, a crucial 98-run stand between Shreyas Iyer (79) and Axar Patel (42) stabilized the innings. Following their dismissal, KL Rahul (23) and Hardik Pandya (45 off 45 balls) played vital knocks, pushing India to a competitive 249/9 in 50 overs.
New Zealand’s Matt Henry was the standout bowler, picking up 5/42 in his eight overs, exploiting the conditions effectively.
Spin choke: Varun Chakravarthy spins India to victory
Chasing 250, New Zealand faltered under pressure as Varun Chakravarthy delivered a mesmerizing spell of 5/42, dismantling their middle order. Despite Kane Williamson’s fighting 81 off 120 balls, the Kiwis struggled to build partnerships, eventually bowled out for 205.
Kuldeep Yadav (2/56), Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya, and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring India’s third consecutive victory in the league stage.
Varun Chakravarthy, who had a disastrous T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai, found redemption with a match-winning five-wicket haul in just his second ODI, earning him the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
With an unbeaten record in the league stage, India heads into the next phase of the Champions Trophy 2025 as strong contenders. Meanwhile, New Zealand will need to reassess their approach to counter spin-friendly conditions in the tournament.
