As India gears up for the second Test against England at Edgbaston starting July 2, uncertainty looms over the participation of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. With the series tilted 1-0 in favour of England, team management led by head coach Gautam Gambhir, skipper Shubman Gill, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar are weighing their options, keeping in mind Bumrah’s workload and injury history.
Bumrah’s workload under scanner after Leeds Test
Bumrah was India’s standout performer in the opening Test at Leeds, claiming a five-wicket haul and bowling a hefty 44.4 overs in the match. However, with only a short three-day break between the second and third Tests, the Indian management had pre-decided that Bumrah would feature in only three of the five matches this series.
Gambhir clarified the team’s stance during a post-match interaction, stating, “We won’t change the plans. Managing his workload is more important, especially with a long season ahead.”
Decision to be taken closer to match day
With nearly a week between the first and second Tests, Bumrah has time to recover, but the decision to play him will likely come just before the game. A BCCI source confirmed, “The final call will be taken after assessment by Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir, and Shubman Gill, possibly a day before the second Test.”
Former chief selector MSK Prasad also weighed in, suggesting Bumrah should ideally be fielded while the series is still alive. “That is a tough call indeed. The management knows best how to manage his workload,” he said.
Series situation complicates Bumrah’s selection
India’s loss from a commanding position at Leeds has increased pressure to level the series in the second Test. However, missing Bumrah would weaken the pace attack significantly and make things easier for the English batters. The situation has created a dilemma: whether to play Bumrah at Edgbaston or save him for Lord’s.
Had India won the first Test, the decision might have been more straightforward, allowing for a more cautious approach. But now, every match could prove decisive, making Bumrah’s presence all the more critical.
