Commonwealth Games 2022

Commonwealth Games Day 5 brewed into an unfortunate day for the Indian mixed group badminton team, as they missed out on the Gold. The Indian National team failed at defending their title against Malaysia on August 2.

PV Sindhu’s win bought India a little respite but the team struggled at keeping the momentum going in the following events, clinching a Silver Medal.

Team Malaysia was able to pick up a perfect start with Teng Fong Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik on their side who were able to contain India’s Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy in the first game, by scoring 21-18, 21-15.

However, PV Sindhu was able to revive the Indian team against Jin Wei Goh by successfully bringing India back into contention. Her win brought a sense of hope to the team who struggled to keep the winning trend going.

The third match, however, was when India was seen slipping in their dreams of the gold. Malaysia’s Ng Tze’s lead gave Malaysia a comfortable position of 2-1 by scoring 21-19, 6-21, 21-16 against Kidambi Srikanth in the third match.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand went against Muralitharan Thinaah and Koong Le Pearly Tan. The duo failed to keep India in the contest, leading Malaysia’s Mixed group Badminton team to bag the gold.

PV Sindhu, reacting to the loss, in an interview, said how, despite the loss against Malaysia, she is happy to get the silver as she was able to get a win in this mixed group badminton category. She further denoted the importance of focus throughout the competition, learning from the loss, and how she plans to go one day at a time to perform her best.

Her plan to get that gold looks rock solid as she enforces a tunnel vision for the Individual category.

ICC mediates between Pakistan Cricket Board and BCCI, seeks assurance from Pakistan for participation in World Cup

Months ahead of ICC Cricket World Cup, tensions have already started between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice are in Lahore, Pakistan to get assurance from the PCC on Pakistan team’s participation in the ICC Cricket World Cup due to be held in October-November.

The ICC seek a confirmation from the PCB that it will not push for implementing a hybrid model for its matches in the World Cup in India.

The development comes after PCB Chief Najam Sethi stated that the Pakistan Cricket team will not travel to India if the Indian team prevents itself from visiting Pakistan for the preceding Asia Cup.

The BCCI is concerned if the hybrid model proposed by the PCB chief is accepted for the Asia Cup, the PCB might also ask the ICC to implement the hybrid model for the ICC World Cup as well.

Sethi said if the Pakistan government doesn’t approve on sending the team to India, the PCB would seek ICC to hold the matches at a neutral venue.

If this situation arrives, it would be a big setback for the both the ICC and the BCCI as India vs Pakistan match happening in India witnesses a completely packed stadium, a successful match for the Indian cricket board and International cricket council economically, whereas if it would be held in any other country it would not be able to attract a large amount of crowd in the stadium, primary reason why BCCI Secretary Jay Shah was reluctant to accept the hybrid model for the Asia Cup.

The PCB Chief has also stated that if the Asia Cup is moved to a neutral country from Pakistan, then the Pakistan Team will not participate in the Asia Cup

The ICC is trying to bring the two nations into board together on the matter.
