The Indian cricket scene has lately been witnessing many twists and turns recently. What began with Former skipper Virat Kohli’s removal from ODI has now reached Rishabh Pant trending on Twitter. You ask why? Here is the reason.

In the ongoing second ODI between India and West Indies, Rishabh Pant opened with Rohit Sharma. The entire cricket fraternity expected that it would be KL Rahul who would accompany Rohit Sharma.

As active as cricket fans in India are, of course, memes had to pour in.

While some fans are not happy with the decision to send Rishabh Pant as an opener, others came to his defence. One user also shared his theory that the promotion of Pant as an Indian ODI opener probably shows that someone in the think-tank really wants to have a left-handed batter facing the new ball with a right-handed batter.

A picture of Pant has been circling the internet in which he is laying down on the ground. Tweeple are drawing comparisons between him and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Another user pointed out that India setting KL Rahul as a number 4 is a good sign. However, in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, team India is in a dire need of opening batsmen.

To note, this is not the first time that Rishabh Pant has opened an ODI match. In the Under-19 World Cup, he was the opening batsman and he did a rather magnificent job.

Fans were a bit taken aback initially, but when has Pant not lived up to their expectations? The reason behind Pant being an opener has been made clear. Team India will be experimenting with a few roles as the next World Cup nears.

It was decided that Shikhar Dhawan would be opening alongside Rohit Sharma. However, he contracted Covid-19 and had to sit out. For KL Rahul, he has performed well for India in the middle-order in ODIs for years now. That is why he did not open the match.

Tilak Varma’s mature, smart innings was the difference: England’s Brydon Carse

The victory secured a commanding 2-0 lead for India in the five-match series, leaving England with a significant uphill battle.

The second T20I between India and England in Chennai witnessed a thrilling contest, ultimately decided by a masterful display of batting from India’s middle-order batsman, Tilak Varma. His unbeaten 72 runs proved to be the difference, a performance that even England’s pace bowling all-rounder, Brydon Carse, readily acknowledged in the post-match press conference.

Carse, reflecting on the match, conceded that despite England setting a challenging 166 runs and maintaining consistent pressure through wickets, Varma’s mature and calculated innings tipped the scales decisively in India’s favour. The victory secured a commanding 2-0 lead for India in the five-match series, leaving England with a significant uphill battle.

The match wasn’t just about Varma’s individual brilliance; it also highlighted the contrasting fortunes of England’s bowlers. While Carse himself contributed significantly with both bat (a quick 31 runs off 17 balls) and ball (three wickets), the spotlight fell heavily on Jofra Archer’s expensive spell. Archer conceded a hefty 60 runs in his four overs, a stark contrast to his impressive performance in the previous match.

Carse, however, offered a measured defence of his teammate, attributing Archer’s costly spell to a combination of factors rather than solely attributing blame. He pointed out that several of the boundaries conceded were well-struck shots over the keeper, highlighting the power and precision of the Indian batsmen. He emphasized that Archer’s overall performance wasn’t wholly negative; the expensive spell was an anomaly rather than representative of his capability. The sheer pace at which Archer bowls, Carse suggested, inherently carries a risk of such high-scoring overs.

Despite the defeat, Carse remained resolute about England’s aggressive strategy. He asserted that their approach, characterized by a commitment to taking risks in both batting and bowling during the power play, would remain unchanged. He acknowledged that room for improvement always exists, but stressed their intention to persist with this inherently high-risk, high-reward strategy. The lack of success so far, he indicated, does not warrant a change in their fundamental approach.

Looking ahead, Carse found some solace in the closely contested nature of the match. He viewed the narrow defeat as a positive learning experience, especially given the significance of close games in preparing for future tournaments, including the upcoming Champions Trophy. While acknowledging the disappointment of the loss, he emphasized the value gained from such high-pressure situations, believing that these experiences will be invaluable in their future performances.

The current predicament, however, is undeniable. With two consecutive defeats and only three matches remaining, England faces a daunting task. Carse recognized the lack of margin for error, stating that every remaining game would be a crucial battle. While acknowledging a degree of team disappointment, he expressed a sense of optimism, highlighting the improved performance compared to the first T20I as a building block for future success. The challenge is clear: win the next three matches to salvage the series.

This dramatic turn of events further highlighted the recent addition to Djokovic’s coaching team: former rival and recently retired Andy Murray. Their collaboration, beginning this month in Melbourne, seemed poised for success.

The 2025 Australian Open witnessed a dramatic turn of events in the men’s semi-final clash between Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev. After a tightly contested first set, which Zverev edged out 7-6(7), a stunned Rod Laver Arena crowd watched as Djokovic unexpectedly announced his withdrawal from the match due to a muscle injury. The former World No. 1’s decision ignited a wave of mixed reactions, ranging from disbelief to outright anger among the spectators.

The post-match press conference revealed further details. Djokovic confirmed a muscle tear, stating he would seek proper medical evaluation upon leaving Australia. However, the immediate aftermath in court was far less clinical.

The Melbourne crowd’s displeasure manifested in a chorus of boos as Djokovic, seemingly unfazed, simply offered a thumbs-up before exiting the stadium. Zverev, in a commendable display of sportsmanship, attempted to calm the audience during his courtside interview, urging them to refrain from booing a tennis legend like Djokovic.

The injury, sustained during Djokovic’s gruelling quarter-final victory against Carlos Alcaraz, became a point of contention. Veteran commentator John McEnroe, known for his outspoken nature, fueled speculation by publicly questioning the legitimacy of the injury, suggesting a calculated tactic to throw his opponent off balance. This added another layer of complexity to an already controversial situation, stirring debate among fans and analysts.

This dramatic turn of events further highlighted the recent addition to Djokovic’s coaching team: former rival and recently retired Andy Murray. Their collaboration, beginning this month in Melbourne, seemed poised for success.

Murray, a former World No. 1 himself, had announced his retirement after the 2024 Paris Olympics, transitioning seamlessly into coaching with Djokovic. He was visibly present courtside throughout Djokovic’s matches, offering support and guidance from the coaching box, including during the tense semi-final.

Djokovic’s withdrawal left Murray noticeably disappointed. This prompted questions about the future of their professional partnership. During the press conference, Djokovic acknowledged their shared disappointment and admitted they hadn’t had the opportunity to discuss the future of their collaboration. He emphasized the need for both of them to decompress before engaging in any serious conversations about their next steps. “We’re still hot-headed and disappointed,” he explained, “We both need to cool off a little bit and then we will have a chat.”

The unexpected turn of events underscored the complex relationship between Djokovic and Murray, who had once been fierce competitors on the court. Their 36 career encounters, a testament to their illustrious careers, saw Djokovic prevail in 25 matches, holding a significant advantage across different surfaces, particularly on hard courts.

Yet, their rivalry has given way to mutual respect and friendship, making the situation even more poignant. The future of their coaching partnership, however, remained uncertain in the wake of this unexpected setback.
