Former Indian cricketers unhappy with Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, call Hardik Pandya a better option

Former Indian cricketers unhappy with Rohit Sharma's captaincy, call Hardik Pandya a better option

Former national selection committee chairman Krishnamachari Srikkanth, former spinner Harbhajan Singh and former batsman Yuvraj Singh have spoken in favour of all-rounder Hardik Pandya being appointed as India’s full-time captain of the shortest format ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Several former players believe that India should focus on the process of rebuilding the team from the limited overs series against New Zealand. India was knocked out of the semi-finals of the recently concluded T20 World Cup where they were thrashed by champions England by 10 wickets. This is India’s fifth knockout defeat in six World Cups.

After this defeat the audience as well as the former cricketers seemed a bit upset with Rohit Sharma’s captaincy and also think that he should step away from T20 captaincy and BCCI should appoint a young captain along with young players in the shortest format.

India will play three T20 Internationals and ODI series against New Zealand from Friday in the absence of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya will lead the team in the shortest format. Former Indian captain Srikkanth said that India will have to find more fast bowling all-rounders ahead of the 2024 World Cup.

He also emphasized on identifying players like Deepak Hooda, who can contribute with bat and ball both. Former India pacer Irfan Pathan said that India should not depend on just one captain and should have multiple players in the team to lead. In the case of Hardik Pandya, Pathan said that he is a fast bowling all-rounder and he also has an injury issue. Hence, if a captain gets injured before the World Cup and any team does not have any other player to lead, then there will be trouble.

Reportedly, BCCI is also planning that young players should be added in the T20 format and senior players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin and Bhuvneshwar Kumar should focus on ODIs and Tests.

IND vs NZ: Can Team India save the T20 series? Check venue, time, Live streaming details for 2nd T20I here

After losing the first T20, the Indian cricket team is trailing by 0-1 in the three-match T20 series against New Zealand. The decisive second T20 of the series will be played today in Lucknow. For Hardik Pandya, a lot of brainstorming will also have to be done to choose the playing 11 in this match.

Even after getting constant support, Shubman Gill has not been able to do any feat in T20 so far. While Arshdeep Singh has performed poorly since the T20 World Cup. In such a situation, some big steps can be taken by the captain and head coach Rahul Dravid in the second match.

Shubman Gill or Prithvi Shaw?

Hardik Pandya has made it clear that Shubman Gill is his priority right now before Shaw and the Mumbaikar will have to wait. But till when? India faced a similar problem with KL Rahul, whose decent strike rate in T20s put India’s T20 squad in danger. With his exclusion from the T20 squad, Team India is still facing a similar problem in the absence of KL Rahul.

The second dilemma is about Arshdeep Singh. Even though he is India’s best performing T20 bowler, he is also the worst performing bowler. Since the T20 World Cup 2022, he has given runs at an economy rate of 11.10. In such a situation, it will be interesting to see whether Mukesh will get a chance to debut in his place after Arshdeep’s poor performance in the the first T20 match.

Team India played its first T20 match against West Indies on this ground. At the same time, in the year 2022, Team India had a clash against Sri Lanka on this ground.
