Rohit Sharma who’s currently isolated in London after testing positive for Covid-19 is again in the split captaincy debate. The talks started after the former Indian opener Virender Sehwag made a remark at Rohit health and longevity as a captain.

Ever since Rohit was announced as the Indian captain in all formats of cricket, the skipper has not been able to participate in all of India’s matches. The reason behind is unavailability have been injuries, health issue and workload management.

And by stating the facts and keeping Rohit’s age in mind, Virender Sehwag thinks that Indian skipper should be relieved from T20 captaincy duties. And that’s when India’s negligence towards split captaincy in international cricket is once again under scanner. However, several countries like Australia and England are already following the split-captaincy rules.

For the unversed, the concept of split captaincy was initiated in 1997 when Australian selectors appointed Mark Taylor for Test cricket and Steve Waugh for the One Day Internationals. And till date cricket teams from different nations have different captains for red and while ball cricket.

But till date BCCI did not feel the need to implement such rule in Indian cricket. This highlights both, do Indians lack in captaincy skills or can men in blue not function under two captains. While several nations have smoothy functioned under two captains, India seems a bit uncomfortable with split captaincy.

Even last year when Virat Kohli stepped down from T20 captaincy, he wanted a new captain for the shortest format of cricket and he wanted to lead the team in both longer formats. But BCCI forced him to step down from ODI captaincy and when the cricketer refused to do so, the board forcefully announced Rohit Sharma as the new 50 overs captain.

BCCI wanted to have Rohit Sharma as the white ball cricket captain and Virat Kohli for the red ball cricket. But seems like the BCCI forcefully removing him from ODI captaincy hurt Virat Kohli and he later even stepped down from the Test captaincy. And finally, Rohit Sharma was announced as the Indian captain in all formats.

However, the concept of split captaincy has not even been tried much in Indian cricket. And several cricketers like legendary Kapil Dev believed that split captaincy can’t work in Indian cricket claiming it not being a part of Indian culture.

Mohammed Shami practices bowling at the nets, with knee heavily strapped.

Mohammed Shami’s anticipated return to international cricket has been further postponed as he was notably absent from India’s lineup for the first T20I against England. This decision has intensified discussions around the fast bowler’s fitness levels.

Despite showing signs of recovery and actively participating in pre-match training sessions, the 34-year-old pacer’s exclusion by skipper Suryakumar Yadav, who chose the playing XI after winning the toss, has raised eyebrows. Shami, observed bowling intensely at the nets while targeting a two-stump line, also had his left knee heavily strapped, a detail that did not go unnoticed during his practice.

The veteran pacer, who has been sidelined for over a year, recently shared his journey of recovery and his determination to return to the field. At a recent Cricket Association of Bengal event, Shami expressed his relentless desire to play for the country and mentioned his active participation in domestic cricket across all formats to regain his form.

Despite this, concerns about his knee swelling post-training sessions linger. Suryakumar Yadav had previously shown confidence in Shami’s recovery, hinting at his inclusion and emphasizing the bowler’s experience as a valuable asset to the team.

However, on the eve of the match, despite Shami’s rigorous training and a subsequent session where he bowled with full intensity, he appeared cautious while walking back to the dressing room, hinting at persistent unease.

This ongoing saga not only affects Shami’s immediate future in the Indian squad but also puts a spotlight on the team’s preparations for the upcoming Champions Trophy, particularly with uncertainty surrounding another key pacer, Jasprit Bumrah.

As the selectors, including Chairman Ajit Agarkar, deliberate on the team’s composition, the emphasis on Shami’s readiness highlights the challenges of managing athlete fitness at the highest levels of cricket. Agarkar has remarked on the strategic importance of reintroducing Shami through shorter formats as a buildup to more intense international engagements.

As the series progresses, all eyes will remain on Shami’s recovery trajectory and his potential impact on the team’s dynamic, especially in the white-ball setup.
