Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and former BCCI president Sharad Pawar inaugurated the Rohit Sharma Stand at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
The ceremony, attended by India’s ODI captain Rohit Sharma, his parents Gurunath and Purnima, wife Ritika Sajdeh, and other dignitaries, saw an emotional Rohit joined on stage by his family. His parents pressed a button to officially unveil the stand’s name, marking a historic moment for the cricketer.
The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) also paid tribute to former India captain Ajit Wadekar during the event.
Rohit, visibly moved, expressed disbelief at the honour, saying, “I never imagined this day would come. You aim for milestones, but having a stand named after me at an iconic venue like Wankhede, where so many memories have been forged, is truly special.”
Having retired from Test cricket on 7 May 2025 and T20 Internationals after captaining India to the 2024 T20 World Cup victory, Rohit now focuses solely on ODIs.
Reflecting on the significance of the moment, he said, “To have my name alongside cricketing legends and one of the world’s most astute political figures is indescribable. I’m deeply grateful.”
Looking ahead to playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL on 21 May, he added, “It’ll be surreal to play here with a stand in my name, especially representing India in front of my home crowd.”
Rohit also acknowledged his family’s unwavering support, with his parents, brother, and wife present. “Having my family here makes this even more meaningful. I’m thankful for their sacrifices throughout my journey,” he said.
The ceremony drew Mumbai Indians teammates, coaching staff, and players, who briefly paused training to join the celebration. Rohit quipped, “My MI team is waiting for my speech to end so they can get back to practice!”
Chief Minister Fadnavis praised Rohit, calling him “an iconic batter, captain, and a fan favourite who captivates with his batting.” He also hinted at future developments, stating, “If the MCA proposes a new stadium, we will allocate space to accommodate more fans, ensuring Mumbai’s cricketing legacy grows.”
The event, attended by teammates, officials, and fans, underscored Rohit’s remarkable career and the enduring significance of Wankhede Stadium, with Sharad Pawar’s presence adding a layer of gravitas to the heartfelt tribute.
