Aryna Sabalenka continued her dominance at the Australian Open, securing her place in a third consecutive final with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory over Paula Badosa. This win positions the world No. 1 just one match away from a historic three-peat, a feat unmatched in women’s singles at Melbourne Park since Martina Hingis’ triumph from 1997 to 1999.

Badosa, who will return to the WTA Top 10 following her impressive semifinal showing, began the match strongly, holding a commanding 2-0, 40-0 lead. However, a rain delay and the subsequent roof closure at Rod Laver Arena disrupted her rhythm. Sabalenka capitalized on the interruption, swiftly regaining parity and reeling off four consecutive games to clinch the first set.

The Belarusian’s dominance intensified in the second set. She significantly improved her first-serve win percentage, leaping from 69% in the first set to an impressive 90% (9/10) in the second. Two further breaks of Badosa’s serve, coupled with conceding only a single break point herself, sealed the victory in a swift 1 hour and 23 minutes.

This win extends Sabalenka’s head-to-head record against Badosa to 6-2, including both of their Grand Slam encounters and stretches her Australian Open winning streak to an astonishing 20 consecutive matches. Her last defeat in Melbourne came against Kaia Kanepi in the fourth round of the 2022 tournament. Sabalenka now awaits the winner of the semifinal clash between Iga Swiatek and Madison Keys, poised to potentially etch her name into Australian Open history.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Novak Djokovic’s participation in the semifinals remains shrouded in uncertainty. A thigh injury sustained during his gruelling three-hour, 37-minute quarterfinal battle against Carlos Alcaraz has cast doubt over his ability to compete. The Serbian champion, who required a medical timeout and painkillers during the match, even admitted to contemplating retirement at one point.

Despite his eventual victory and a subsequent statement expressing his determination to continue, Djokovic’s absence from a scheduled practice session fueled speculation regarding the severity of his injury. While he secured a hard-fought win, questions about the true extent of his injury persist, adding another layer of intrigue to his upcoming semifinal against Alexander Zverev.
