In a major development ahead of India’s tour of Australia, Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma at the helm. The three-match series begins on October 19 in Perth, marking a new era in India’s 50-over cricket leadership.
Gill Takes Charge Of ODI Side
The 26-year-old opener, who also leads India in Tests, will now captain the ODI team for the first time. His elevation comes shortly after his successful debut as Test captain, guiding India to a commanding innings-and-140-run win against West Indies in Ahmedabad.
Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, remains part of the ODI squad as a senior batter, alongside Virat Kohli — both making a comeback to the format since India’s triumphant 2025 Champions Trophy campaign.
Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain for the ODIs, while Hardik Pandya and Rishabh Pant continue to miss out as they recover from respective injuries — Pandya from a quadriceps strain and Pant from a fractured right foot.
Key Selections And Omissions
With the absence of a few regulars, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Dhruv Jurel have earned ODI call-ups. Yashasvi Jaiswal finds a place in the squad, while veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja misses out. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI leg but will feature in the T20I series.
The bowling lineup includes Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna.
Rohit And Kohli Prepare For Busy Season
Although Rohit and Kohli haven’t played competitive cricket since the IPL 2025, both are gearing up for a packed ODI calendar. India will host South Africa and New Zealand for three-match ODI series each later this year. Rohit has been training at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, while Kohli has been preparing in London.
