Tamil Nadu farmer killed for refusing to call dogs by their names
A man was killed after refusing to call his neighbor’s dogs by their names, instead calling the beasts ‘dogs’

A man was killed after refusing to call his neighbor’s dogs by their names, instead calling the beasts ‘dogs’.
According to the police, Rayappan, a 65-year-old farmer, got into a scuffle with his neighbors, Vincent and Daniel, after he complained to them that their dogs had been aggressive towards people passing by.
The incident took place in Thadikombu town of Dindigul district in Tamil Nadu, they said.
Rayappan had complained several times to his neighbors, who are also his relatives, about the behavior of their pets who pestered and often chased after people passing from the area.
However, on the fateful day, the situation turned ugly, after Rayappan refused to call the dogs by their ‘names’, instead calling them dogs and telling Daniel and Vincent to keep the beasts on a leash.
This infuriated the owners, and a scuffle broke out during which Rayappan sought a stick to attack the dogs.
The furious owners hit Rayappan, who fell unconscious and died on the spot.
Police have registered a case and lookout notice has been issued to nab the accused, officials said.

Tamizhagam row: Never suggested Tamil Nadu name change, says Governor RN Ravi
Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Wednesday, clarified his “Tamizhagam” comment, saying that he never meant to infer changing the name of the state.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, Wednesday, clarified his “Tamizhagam” comment, saying that he never meant to infer changing the name of the state.
Ravi said that the word “Tamizhagam” refers to the historical cultural connect between the Tamil people and Kashi in the ancient past when there was no Tamil Nadu state.
He said that it was “erroneous and far-fetched” to interpret his comments as a suggestion to change the name of Tamil Nadu.
In a literal sense, Tamil Nadu means “the land of Tamils”, which many critics believe pushes for the narrative of the state not being an integral part of India. Whereas, Tamizhagam means the “home of the Tamil people”, a definition which is viewed by nationalists more appropriate.
Ravi shot down arguments by the state governments that his comments indicated he was against the word Tamil Nadu.
The clarification comes after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin urged President Draupadi Murmu to intervene and ensure the governor abides by the Constitution.
Stalin and his party DMK have been at odds with Ravi regularly and hostilities reached a fever pitch when the Governor went off-script while reading out an official speech approved by the government in the assembly.
Congress among other allies of the DMK have also demanded the Governor’s recall.
While speaking at an event on January 4, Ravi had said: “Whatever applies to the entire country, Tamil Nadu says no. It has become a habit. Truth must prevail. Tamizhagam is a more appropriate word. The rest of the country suffered a lot of devastation at the hands of foreigners for a long time.”
The Governor’s comments created a stir, the ruling DMK accused him of pushing the BJP-RSS agenda as slogans of “Quit Tamil Nadu” were raised in the assembly against him.
Pertinently, the Tamil Tamil version of the Governor’s house Raj Bhavan’s invite for Pongal celebrations referred to him as “Thamizhaga aazhunar” or “Governor of Tamizhagam”.

Tamil Nadu: Training begins for bulls ahead Pongal for Jallikattu
In a few weeks, the furious sport known as Jallikattu, also known as “Eru Thazhuvuthal” and “Mancuvirattu,” will take place.

Bull trainers in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai are preparing for the renowned “Jallikattu” celebration ahead of the Pongal festival.
More than ten bulls have been trained for the tournament by more than 20 teenagers from the Podumbu village in the Madurai district. Bulls are undergoing swimming and walking tranings.
In a few weeks, the furious sport known as Jallikattu, also known as “Eru Thazhuvuthal” and “Mancuvirattu,” will take place.
Bulls are also trained to hone their skills by digging their horns in the muddy ground, a procedure known as “Mann Kuthal.” When someone tries to grab a bull by the hump, the animal is ready to strike.
A bull owner named Kottai Swami said that since 2017, he and his friends have been training bulls in Jallikattu, and currently had more than 10 bulls. He added that they were raising ten bulls for the Jallikattu sport with the help of 20 of his friends. They give the bulls food, such as cotton seeds and tamarind, to eat. The bulls are being prepared for Mann Kuthal, swimming, and walking.
Additionally, he added that they expect that the Supreme Court will rule in favour of Jallikattu, and CM Stalin and PM Modi should support us in holding Jallikattu competition.
He also said that since 2014, he has been taking part in Jallikattu. His friends and him get together in the morning to train bulls to walk. Additionally, we offer instruction in Mann Kuthal and swimming, the bull owner said.
While everything is going on, the Tamil Nadu government has said that the Jallikattu competition, the Tamils’ heroic sport, will go place as scheduled on the upcoming Pongal holiday.
Recently, a Supreme Court Constitution Bench reserved for judgement a number of petitions that sought to overturn a Tamil Nadu statute that safeguards Jallikattu by arguing that the sport of taming bulls is a part of the State’s cultural legacy and is protected by Article 29 (1) of the Constitution.
