Google, one of the heavyweights in the cloud computing market along with Microsoft, Amazon, Google and Oracle seems to be unhappy with two of its big rivals. Reportedly, Google has written a letter of complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) alleging that Microsoft has used unfair licensing terms to gain more control in the cloud computing market.

The tech giant in its letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) argued that Microsoft’s Office products and Windows Server make it extremely difficult for clients to use Azure cloud only. It added that Microsoft has licensing restrictions, which makes it difficult for clients to explore other enterprise software options.

Furthermore, it mentioned that Microsoft had seen a lot of cyberattacks on its products and services. According to Google, with Microsoft having so much control, it could lead to national security and cybersecurity risk. Meanwhile, the tech giant also took an aim at Oracle. It claimed that with overly complex agreements that seek to lock in clients to their ecosystems, companies such as Microsoft and Oracle are not only forcing customers towards a monolithic cloud model but also limiting choice, escalating costs for customers, and disrupting growing and thriving digital ecosystems in the US and around the globe.

As far as reports are concerned, earlier, Google has been accused of following the same unfair practices by many countries, including the US. In the year 2020, Google was accused by the US administration of using its monopoly to thwart competition by having exclusionary agreements in place. As of now, neither Microsoft nor Oracle has responded to the letter that Google has written. Reportedly, the letter was written after the Federal Trade Commission staff sought information on business practices of cloud computing providers together with issues concerning the market powers of these companies, its impact on competition and potential security risks.

Reliance Jio has announced a strategic partnership with SpaceX to introduce Starlink broadband services in India, a move aimed at improving internet accessibility, especially in remote and rural regions. The deal will enable Jio to leverage SpaceX’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, enhancing its existing broadband services like JioAirFiber and JioFiber.

Under this collaboration, Starlink equipment will be available at Reliance Jio stores across the country, subject to regulatory approvals. Customers will also have access to installation, activation, and support services provided by Jio.

Boosting India’s digital connectivity

The partnership aligns with Jio’s goal of ensuring high-speed internet access for enterprises, small and medium businesses (SMBs), and communities across the country. By utilizing Starlink’s extensive satellite network, the initiative is expected to bridge connectivity gaps in difficult-to-reach locations.

Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO of SpaceX, welcomed the partnership, stating, “We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorization from the Government of India to provide more people, organizations, and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services.”

Regulatory approvals and future collaborations

While the partnership is a significant step, Starlink’s services in India still require clearance from regulatory authorities. Once approved, Starlink broadband services will be available for purchase and activation through Jio’s distribution network.

Additionally, Jio and SpaceX plan to explore other complementary areas of cooperation, utilizing their infrastructure to further strengthen India’s digital ecosystem.

This development follows SpaceX’s recent agreement with Bharti Airtel, which also intends to sell Starlink equipment and provide connectivity solutions to business customers, schools, health centers, and remote communities.
