Days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah claimed that riots would take place in Karnataka if Congress comes to power, the Congress leaders Randeep Singh Surjewala, Parmeshwar, and DK Shivakumar on Thursday filed a police complaint against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader.
Congress leaders filed the complaint in Bengaluru’s High Grounds police station and accused Amit Shah and the organizers of the BJP rally of allegedly making provocative statements, promoting enmity and hatred, and maligning the opposition.
Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar asked how can a Union Home Minister say that if the opposition party [Congress] comes to power then there will be communal riots. He further said that they have filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India regarding Shah’s false claims and provocative statements.
Shivakumar said action should be taken according to the law. He said if a common man had done it, he would have been arrested. The Union Home Minister cannot say if Congress comes to power there will be communal riots. He’s the home minister, not the star campaigner of the BJP, Shivakumar added.

He said that Congress has filed the FIR under Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language), 171 G (false statement in connection with an election), 505(2) (statements creating or promoting enmity, hatred or ill-will between classes) and 123 (concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
On Wednesday, Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called Shah’s statement brazenly intimidatory. He said Shah’s statement shows the 4-I strategy which means Insult, Inflame. Incite and Intimidate.
This comes after Amit Shah on Tuesday stated that Karnataka will slip into reverse gear if the grand old party forms government. He said only BJP could lead the state towards a new Karnataka.
Addressing a public meeting at Terdal in Karnataka’s Belagavi district on Tuesday, Shah said if Congress is given a chance, there will be appeasement politics all around. With Congress coming to power in Karnataka, dynastic politics will be at an all-time high in the state and it will be afflicted with communal riots, he added.
