SP said one person among them managed to escape from the spot while others failed to do so.

At least 12 people are feared trapped under the debris of a stone quarry collapse in Mizoram’s Hanahthiyal district on Monday. At least eight bodies have been recovered from the site, while four are still missing. A search operation is underway.
Hnahthial Superintendent of Police (SP) Vineet Kumar said the incident occurred at around 3 pm when 13 labourers of ABCI Infrastructure private limited were working in the quarry at Maudarh village when it caved in.
SP said one person among them managed to escape from the spot while others failed to do so.
The National Disaster Response Force said in a statement the identification of the dead bodies will be done after post-mortem examination. The search operation is still going on and will be continued till all missing are found.
Reports state that when the stone quarry collapsed, the workers at the private enterprise in Maudarh, Hnahthial district, had just returned from their lunch break. The workers, five Hitachi excavators, and other drilling equipment were said to be buried beneath the quarry, according to the reports.
Volunteers from Leite village and Hnahthial town immediately reached the spot for a rescue operation. People also informed the State Disaster Response Force, Border Security Force, and Assam Rifles to conduct a rescue operation. The quarry has been operational for two and a half years.
People who were there reported that while the workers were breaking and gathering the stones at the quarry, loose soil came tumbling down from above. They said that members of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) from neighbouring villages also hurried to the site for the rescue effort.
Maudarh is a small hamlet located about 23 km away from Hnahthial town. Stones or boulders are taken from the quarry by the firm that is currently building a highway between Dawn Village and Hnahthial.
