The Oscar-winning documentary’s celebrated tribal couple, Bomman and Bellie, have accused the filmmakers of financial exploitation and neglect. They have served director Kartiki Gonsalves with a legal letter asking for a Rs 2 crore goodwill gesture.
A copy of the legal notice, which said that the mahout couple was offered a home, a car, and a cash lump sum as recompense for their time, with the sum to be decided based on the revenue earned from the project. The elite, famous people, athletes, and political figures were all introduced to the couple as the real heroes of the initiative. This helped them achieve recognition for their efforts and earned them widespread visibility. The pair, however, did not receive any financial reward for their work because the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and the Prime Minister of India gave the filmmaker all the financial benefits.
The couple requested additional information from their lawyers and declined to comment on the situation. They had turned to a long-time friend and acquaintance, Chennai-based lawyer and social activist Pravin Raj, for assistance, and he connected them with a local legal office.
Kartiki Gonsalves, who promised the couple financial support and assistance with the schooling of Bellie’s granddaughter while shooting the Oscar-winning documentary, has now let them down. She is reportedly now refusing to pay them even a little portion of the tremendous earnings from the movie, though.
According to Pravin Raj, Bomman and Bellie have been making sure that Gonsalves has been doing what she requested of them in the hopes that they will all benefit jointly when the movie is successful. Gonsalves, though, hasn’t been returning Bomman’s calls.
In response to the allegations, The Elephant Whisperers’ director, Kartiki Gonsalves, and the production firm Sikhya Entertainment issued a statement. The mahouts Bomman and Bellie of the Forest Department and the incredible work they perform to promote elephant conservation were quoted as saying, the purpose of developing The Elephant Whisperers has always been to emphasise. The documentary has had a significant impact on the Mahouts and Cavadis community since its release and has increased awareness of the issue. To help the 91 Mahouts and Cavadis who care for the state’s elephants, build eco-friendly homes for the carers, and establish an elephant camp in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, our honourable chief minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, has donated money.
The statement continued saying, that heads of state from all over India have praised the documentary, and the Academy Award is a source of great pride for the country because it has helped mahouts like Bomman and Bellie gain widespread recognition for their efforts. Every claim made is false. It also said, they continue to be motivated by the desire to bring about positive change and have the utmost respect for everyone who contributed to this narrative.
