Gold prices reach new heights amid Trump’s tariff announcements

Published

Gold price

In a significant market shift, gold prices reached an all-time high, propelled by investor anxiety over new tariffs introduced by President Donald Trump against several key trading partners. The move has heightened concerns about potential inflation and adverse impacts on global economic growth.

On Monday, spot gold experienced a sharp rise, increasing by 0.6% to reach $2,816.53 per ounce, peaking at $2,818.58 at one point during the trading session. This surge coincided with heightened geopolitical tensions following the U.S. President’s decision to implement a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, alongside a 10% levy on Chinese goods, sparking fears of a full-blown trade conflict.

In response to the U.S. action, affected countries have begun to retaliate. Canada and Mexico have announced countermeasures, while China has vowed to contest the tariffs through the World Trade Organization and is preparing unspecified reciprocal actions.

U.S. gold futures also saw an uptick, rising by 0.7% to $2,855.90 per ounce, reflecting a growing premium over spot prices amid these uncertainties.

Experts like Phillip Streible, chief market strategist at Blue Line Futures, have voiced concerns over the ramifications of these tariffs. According to Streible, such measures could potentially drive inflation higher and impact economic growth by increasing costs and fostering a stagflation-like environment.

Gold’s status as a safe haven during times of economic and geopolitical turmoil has been reinforced by these developments, as investors continue to seek security in the precious metal amidst the ongoing uncertainty.

Neil Nitin Mukesh recalls being detained at New York airport, says he asked them to google him

This extended period of detention undoubtedly caused significant stress and inconvenience.

Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh recently shared a disconcerting account of his detention at a New York airport, highlighting the challenges faced by even prominent Indian citizens while travelling internationally. During filming for the movie New York, Mukesh found himself detained by immigration officials who refused to accept his Indian nationality, despite presenting his Indian passport. This incredulity, despite his documentation, led to a prolonged interrogation.

The actor described the incident to Mashable India, painting a picture of frustration and disbelief. He was held for approximately four hours, initially prevented from providing any explanation or clarification of his identity. The officials’ scepticism was unwavering, even in the face of his valid travel documents. This extended period of detention undoubtedly caused significant stress and inconvenience.

Mukesh’s account emphasizes the power imbalance inherent in such situations. The inability to immediately and effectively communicate one’s identity can lead to significant anxiety and feelings of helplessness. The experience underscores the need for improved communication and sensitivity from immigration officials in handling such cases, especially when individuals present valid documentation.

Only after four hours of detention did officials finally relent and ask for Mukesh’s side of the story. His response was simple yet effective: “Just Google me.” This seemingly nonchalant suggestion proved surprisingly effective. The subsequent questioning shifted focus to his family history, delving into his lineage as the grandson of the legendary playback singer Mukesh, and the son of Nitin Mukesh, another well-known playback singer in the Indian film industry. The officials’ apparent embarrassment suggests a realization of their hasty judgment based on preconceived notions.

The incident serves as a reminder of the biases and assumptions that can impact interactions with immigration officials, even for individuals who have nothing to hide. Mukesh’s story, while frustrating, serves as a cautionary tale and highlights the importance of clear communication, due process, and respectful treatment for all travellers regardless of their background. His current project, the satirical action-comedy Hisaab Barabar, streaming on ZEE5, offers a stark contrast to the serious implications of his New York airport experience.
