Shreyas Iyer’s dominant knock earns title of best middle-over batter as Aakash Chopra lauds technical shift

Aakash Chopra hailed Shreyas Iyer as India’s best middle-over batter after his unbeaten 97 helped Punjab Kings seal a thrilling 11-run IPL win over Gujarat Titans.

Shreyas Iyer drew high praise from former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra following his explosive 97* off just 42 balls in Punjab Kings’ thrilling 11-run win over Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Chopra hailed Iyer’s clean and calculated hitting, especially against spin, calling him the best Indian batter in the middle overs.

Speaking after the match, Chopra emphasized Iyer’s ability to take down spinners without stepping out, making him unpredictable and difficult to bowl to. “It was just the clean, crisp hitting—especially against spin,” said Chopra. “I believe he is the best Indian batter in the middle overs when it comes to taking down spinners.”

Chopra also pointed out a key technical tweak in Iyer’s batting stance that has improved his overall game. He observed that Iyer has slightly opened up his stance, allowing better control over short balls and expanding his shot range. “Traditionally, batting is side-on, but Shreyas has adjusted such that his back leg is slightly open. His bat is now positioned just outside the off-stump, which helps him access new areas and handle the short ball more effectively,” Chopra explained.

Iyer’s brilliance was complemented by Shashank Singh, who smashed 44 off just 16 balls, as the duo piled on 77 runs in the final four overs. Their aggressive finish powered PBKS to 243/5, which proved just enough to hold off Gujarat Titans at 232/5.

Chopra concluded that Iyer’s balance and adaptability are elevating his game, making him a vital asset in the middle order.

Chris Woakes trolls Babar Azam, ignites fab five vs fab four debate

England’s Chris Woakes took a playful jab at Babar Azam with a ‘King Babar’ comment on social media, amusing fans and reigniting the Fab Five debate.

The Fab Four versus Fab Five debate just got a fresh spark, and this time it wasn’t even about Babar Azam — until England’s Chris Woakes brought him into the conversation out of nowhere.

South African all-rounder Wiaan Mulder, recently signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the IPL 2025 season, shared a promotional post related to a vehicle in association with his domestic side, the Lions. Surprisingly, Chris Woakes dropped a comment saying “King Babar” under the post, despite no mention or connection to the Pakistani batter.

The unexpected remark drew sharp reactions online, with some fans taking offense and flooding the comment section with abuse. While many saw it as harmless banter — possibly an inside dressing-room joke from Woakes and Mulder’s time as SA20 teammates — the internet’s reaction was anything but mild.

The reference could also be linked to a heated on-field incident between Babar Azam and Wiaan Mulder during the second Test between Pakistan and South Africa at Newlands. During that game, Mulder bowled a delivery that Babar defended. The ball rolled back to the bowler, who hurled it back with force, prompting Babar to confront him. The duo exchanged words before being separated by teammates and umpires.

Babar had responded on the field by scoring a gritty 81 and building a crucial 205-run stand with Shan Masood. However, despite his efforts, South Africa clinched the match with a 10-wicket victory.

While the “Fab Four” of Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson, and Joe Root are widely celebrated as modern greats, many Pakistani fans have long pushed for expanding the elite club into a “Fab Five” to include Babar Azam. Woakes’ light troll has added a humorous layer to this ongoing debate. However, Babar Azam continues to divide opinion when it comes to the ‘Fab Five’ club.

Currently, Babar Azam is gearing up for Pakistan’s ODI series against New Zealand starting March 29. After a disappointing Champions Trophy 2025 campaign and subsequent exclusion from the T20I squad, the upcoming ODIs could prove critical for Babar, both in terms of form and position in the national side.
