Khudiram Bose Death Anniversary: The brave freedom fighter who gave up his life for the independence of our country

In the annals of India’s struggle for independence, the pages are adorned with the names of numerous young heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. Among these revered figures, Khudhiram Bose stands immortal. The backdrop of British colonial rule saw numerous instances of British officers subjecting Indians to mistreatment and cruelty. Notably, one such figure was Magistrate Kingsford, stationed in Muzaffarpur. His oppressive actions against Indians, coupled with severe punishments even for minor infractions, compelled the revolutionaries to take action.

During a significant gathering of prominent revolutionaries in Kolkata, a strategic plan was hatched to deliver a lesson to Kingsford. Present in this crucial meeting was the young Khudhiram Bose, who, despite his tender age, volunteered to shoulder the task. Alongside him, Praffulla Kumar Chaki was entrusted with a similar responsibility.

After meticulous planning, the determined youths were armed with a bomb, three pistols, and 40 cartridges. Their destination was Muzaffarpur, where they established a base at a local dharamshala. The days that followed were spent observing Kingsford’s activities, enabling them to discern his daily routine, including his arrivals and departures from the court. However, the task of eliminating him proved formidable, given his substantial security detail.

Khudhiram and Praffulla then shifted their focus to a different aspect of his routine. It came to light that Kingsford frequented a club every evening, arriving in a conspicuous red buggy. The two valiant revolutionaries resolved to strike during this vulnerable time. On April 30, 1908, positioned within the nearby bushes, they awaited the conclusion of the club’s festivities. As a scarlet buggy emerged from the club, Khudhiram and Praffulla seized the opportunity. Stealthily climbing onto the carriage from behind, they discreetly parted the curtain and planted the bomb before making their escape.

Fate, however, dealt an unexpected hand. Kingsford’s absence from the club that evening led to a tragic twist of events. Instead, two English women found themselves in the fateful carriage and fell victim to the explosion orchestrated by the resolute revolutionaries. The incident triggered a widespread police pursuit, with law enforcement cordoning off the area. The carriage’s driver provided information to the police about the two individuals.

As the night unfolded, Khudhiram and Praffulla continued their flight, grappling with exhaustion, hunger, and thirst. Their singular objective was to reach Kolkata unscathed by any means. Eventually, the duo’s evasive maneuvers came to an end, leading to their capture. On August 11, 1908, Khudhiram faced the gallows with the Bhagavad Gita clasped in his hand. At a mere 18 years, 8 months, and 8 days old, he epitomized the spirit of sacrifice in the pursuit of freedom.

A disturbing incident at a government primary school in Gwalior has triggered an official inquiry after a dead frog was found in food prepared under the Mid-Day Meal scheme. The discovery has renewed concerns over food safety standards in schools across Madhya Pradesh.

Viral image prompts swift action by district authorities

A photo circulating online showed a dead frog in a cooked vegetable dish reportedly served at the Government Primary School in Gokulpura. The incident came to light when teachers noticed the contamination before lunchtime. They recorded a video, alerted authorities and pointed out that complaints about foul smell, insects and poor-quality food had been raised earlier as well.

The uproar prompted immediate intervention from the District Panchayat. The Chief Executive Officer ordered a detailed probe, directing District Education Officer Hariom Chaturvedi to verify the video’s authenticity and review how the contamination occurred.

Separately, senior officials, including Collector Ruchika Chauhan, have sought reports from the school administration and the Mid-Day Meal provider. Authorities have stated that strict disciplinary action will follow if negligence is confirmed.

Renewed scrutiny of the Mid-Day Meal programme

This incident adds to ongoing concerns about hygiene and monitoring under the meal scheme, which is meant to improve child nutrition and encourage school attendance. Despite being a key welfare initiative, repeated lapses in food quality have been reported in the state, raising questions about oversight and accountability.

Where is Imran Khan? Sisters allege police assault amid rumours on jailed ex-PM’s condition

Imran Khan’s sisters have accused police of assaulting them during a peaceful attempt to meet the jailed former prime minister, as PTI alleges he remains in isolation without legal or family access.

Three sisters of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan have alleged that they were manhandled by police outside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail after they gathered to seek a meeting with the jailed leader. Their claim comes at a time when rumours about Khan’s death in prison have been circulating on social media, prompting renewed concerns over his health and the restrictions placed on his visitors.

Sisters claim denial of meeting, allege “brutal” assault

Khan’s sisters — Noreen Khan, Aleema Khan and Uzma Khan — said they were not permitted to meet him for over three weeks, despite repeated attempts. According to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), their supporters were also present outside the jail when police allegedly used force to disperse them.

In a letter to Punjab police chief Usman Anwar, Noreen Niazi said the group had gathered peacefully without blocking traffic or engaging in unlawful activity. She claimed that streetlights were switched off before police personnel moved in and assaulted those present.
She alleged she was dragged by her hair, thrown to the ground and injured, while other women were slapped and pulled away from the site. The sisters demanded immediate action against the officials involved.

PTI alleges isolation of the former PM in jail

Imran Khan, imprisoned since August 2023 in multiple cases, is currently held in isolation, the party claimed. PTI representatives said he is being denied access to books, essential items and even legal consultation. A lawyer from his legal team stated that meetings have been blocked for over a month, adding that even Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi was denied permission despite several attempts.

Rumours of Khan’s death in custody, widely circulated online in recent days, have heightened concerns among supporters, prompting renewed demands for clarity on his well-being.

Gautam Gambhir says BCCI will decide his future after 2-0 test series defeat

Gautam Gambhir has left his future as India’s Test coach to the BCCI after a 2-0 series loss to South Africa, saying the blame begins with him and calling for stronger focus on Test cricket.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has put the responsibility of deciding his future on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), following the team’s 2-0 Test series loss to South Africa. India’s defeat in Guwahati, their heaviest in terms of runs, has intensified scrutiny over the team’s performance under Gambhir’s leadership.

Gambhir leaves decision to BCCI

After India’s 408-run defeat, Gambhir made it clear during the press conference that he would not ask for more chances.
He said the BCCI would decide whether he should continue as Test coach.

“Indian cricket is important, I am not. It is for the BCCI to decide,” Gambhir stated, adding that he has always maintained this stance. He also reminded that he had previously delivered results in major tournaments like the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup.

“Blame starts with me,” says Gambhir

Gambhir accepted full responsibility for the series loss, acknowledging that every member of the team shares the blame.

He pointed to India’s collapse from 95/1 to 122/7 as a turning point that cannot be justified.

“You don’t blame individuals. Blame lies with everyone, and it starts with me,” he said.

Criticism over team changes and approach

Under Gambhir, India have lost 10 of 18 Tests, with consecutive whitewash defeats—first against New Zealand last year and now South Africa. Despite team overhauls and new faces, results have remained unchanged.

He has faced criticism for frequent experimentation, especially his preference for all-rounders over specialist players in the traditional format.

Responding to queries on what kind of players succeed in Tests, Gambhir said the format demands resilience.

“You don’t need the most flamboyant and talented cricketers. You need tough characters with limited skills,” he said.

“Prioritise Test cricket,” Gambhir urges

Gambhir stressed that reviving India’s Test performance requires a collective effort and a renewed focus on red-ball cricket.

“If you are serious about Test cricket in India, start prioritising it. You cannot blame only players or a certain individual,” he emphasised.
