Tamil superstar Suriya’s latest film, Retro, has stormed past the Rs. 100-crore milestone at the worldwide box office, grossing Rs. 104 crore in less than a week since its May 1, 2025, release, according to an official announcement from 2D Entertainment.
Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film has captivated audiences with its genre-blending narrative, earning Rs. 48.90 crore net in India as of Tuesday, per trade tracker Sacnilk. 2D Entertainment shared the milestone on their official X account, celebrating the film’s rapid success.
In Retro, Suriya plays Paarivel Kannan, a reformed gangster chasing love to the Andaman Islands while confronting his criminal past, embodied by his gangster father. The film, featuring Pooja Hegde, Joju George, Jayaram, and Nasser, has sparked polarized reviews. Critics have lauded its bold experimentation, with one review noting, “Despite a patchy middle, Retro is a daring venture Tamil cinema needs more of.”
However, some have critiqued its cluttered storyline and lackluster second half. Santhosh Narayanan’s music, Shafique Mohamed Ali’s editing, and Shreyaas Krishna’s cinematography, backed by co-producers Rajsekar Karpoorasundarapandian and Karthikeyan Santhanam of Stone Bench Films, have drawn praise.
In a related development, on May 3, 2025, Suriya addressed a promotional event for Retro in Chennai, where he confirmed his next project with director Venky Atluri, set to begin filming in May.
Titled tentatively as Suriya 44, the film marks a shift to a lighter, romantic genre, contrasting Retro’s intensity. Suriya also discussed his upcoming Suriya 45 with RJ Balaji and Vaadivaasal with Vetri Maaran, exciting fans with his diverse slate.
The event, attended by co-star Pooja Hegde, saw Suriya express gratitude for Retro’s global reception, highlighting Tamil cinema’s growing international appeal.
Bankrolled by Suriya and Jyotika’s 2D Entertainment, Retro continues to draw crowds, bolstered by Suriya’s star power and Subbaraj’s innovative vision.
As Tamil films increasingly compete on a global stage, Retro’s swift box office triumph underscores the industry’s ability to blend commercial success with creative risk-taking, setting the stage for Suriya’s upcoming ventures.
