Vidaamuyarchi movie review: Ajith Kumar’s action thriller deviates from the norm

Ajith Kumar and Trisha in a scene from the movie Vidaamuyarchi

In his latest cinematic venture, “Vidaamuyarchi,” directed by Magizh Thirumeni, Ajith Kumar pairs up with co-stars Arjun Sarja and Trisha to deliver a film that steers clear of relying solely on the gravitational pull of star power. This action thriller impresses with its technical prowess and commitment to genre essentials.

Unlike typical commercial blockbusters, “Vidaamuyarchi” carves out a niche for itself as a full-fledged thriller, engaging audiences with a story of perseverance and intrigue. The narrative unfolds with Arjun and Kayal, portrayed by Ajith Kumar and Trisha, embarking on a final journey amidst their divorce proceedings. Their adventure takes a dramatic turn when their car breaks down in Azerbaijan, leading to a mysterious disappearance and a subsequent frantic search.

The film introduces Ajith Kumar in a refreshingly understated manner, focusing on character development over flashy heroics. The first half of “Vidaamuyarchi” skillfully draws viewers into the couple’s past romance, employing montages that depict their initial bliss and eventual fallout. Despite some dialogues feeling contrived, the genuine chemistry between the leads compensates, anchoring the emotional core of the movie.

As the plot progresses, the storyline centers on Arjun’s quest to find his missing wife, which inadvertently entangles him with a major crime syndicate. Director Magizh Thirumeni maintains a linear storyline, peppered with twists that keep the suspense alive, especially towards the interval. However, the second half suffers from a bit of redundancy, and the script occasionally stumbles with predictable plot points and a lack of thrilling action sequences.

Despite its few shortcomings, “Vidaamuyarchi” stands out for its attempt to diverge from formulaic action thrillers. It may not deliver constant high-octane action or shocking twists, but it offers a compelling look at personal and criminal conflicts, set against the backdrop of a visually stunning Azerbaijan.

Magizh Thirumeni’s articulate promotion of the film as a departure from conventional commercial entertainers rings true, making “Vidaamuyarchi” a noteworthy addition to Tamil cinema, not just for its star cast but for its ambition to redefine action thrillers.
