The Indian-origin author Salman Rushdie is on a ventilator after being attacked on the stage at the Chautauqua Institute in western New York on Friday. The 75-year-old author was stabbed in the neck and abdomen at a literary event. Rushdie was immediately airlifted to the hospital.

Andrew Wylie, the author’s agent, told the media that Rushdie suffered nerve damage in one arm and damage to his liver. The reports state that he is likely to lose one eye. He is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred soon after Rushdie took his seat on the stage and was about to be introduced. The attacker rushed to the stage and stabbed the author multiple times.

Salman Rushdie has been receiving death threats for over a decade. Here’s why:

The Booker Prize winner was on the radar for over a decade after he launched his novel The Satanic Verses. This was Rushdie’s fourth novel, which was published in 1988. The book was banned in Iran, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other countries as they found the novel disrespectful to the Prophet Mohammed.

Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the supreme leader of Iran, set up a reward for his assassination. He remained untraceable for almost ten years, frequently changing residences, and unable to reveal his residence to his children. Rushdie began to emerge from his life on the run after the Iranian government in 1998 said it won’t enforce that fatwa or edict.

Who attacked Salman Rushdie?

The attacker has been identified as Hadi Matar, a 24-year-old from New Jersey. The alleged attacker is currently in custody. He had a pass to be on the grounds of Chautauqua Institution’s lecture. He has not been formally charged. The charges will depend on Rushdie’s condition, said New York State Police.

New York State Police further said What we experienced at Chautauqua today is an incident unlike anything in our nearly 150 years of history. Our job right now is to continue to be a resource for Salman Rushdie’s family. We are working with the FBI to understand the motto of this attack, they added.

The authorities said that they are at a very early stage of the investigation. We are in the process of obtaining search warrants, they said.

Former US President Donald Trump’s Florida home raided by FBI, Republican leader calls it prosecutorial misconduct

This comes as he prepares for a possible third presidential run in 2024.

Former US President Donald Trump

Former US President Donald Trump said that his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida was raided by FBI agents on Monday. However, there is no official confirmation about the reason for the raid from the federal government, but there are reports that the search was conducted in relation to the potential mishandling of classified documents that had been sent to Mar-a-Lago.

The FBI declined to comment on the reason for the raid, but US media reports state that the probe is related to documents that the former President may have taken to Mar-a-Lago on leaving the White House.

Trump has called the unprecedented search an act of prosecutorial misconduct. This comes as he prepares for a possible third presidential run in 2024.

The ex-president posted a statement on his Truth Social platform, where he said that his beautiful home, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, is currently under siege, raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents. He further said that it (raid) is prosecutorial misconduct, the weaponization of the justice system, and an attack by radical left Democrats who desperately don’t want him to run for President in 2024.

Trump said such an assault could only take place in broken, third-world countries. Sadly, America has now become one of those countries, he said, adding, they even broke into my safe!

The US media news channel reported that the former President was in Trump Tower in New York City at the time of the raid.

Eric Trump, the ex-president’s second-oldest son said that the FBI’s execution of search on Trump’s Florida residence was related to an investigation into the handling of National Archives records.

Earlier in February, the National Archives, the US government agency retrieved 15 boxes from Mar-a-Lago, some of which contained classified records. By law, US presidents must submit all of their letters, official papers, and emails to the National Archives.

However, according to officials, the former president ripped up various documents without consent. The Archives said some of them had to be taped back together. When the allegations of inappropriately handling government papers first surfaced, Trump dismissed them as fake news.
