The coronavirus pandemic doesn’t seem to fade anytime soon. The emergence of the Omicron variant has taken the world by storm. India is witnessing a sharp spike in Covid-19 cases. Several states and union territories are introducing fresh guidelines in order to curb the rapid surge in coronavirus cases.

From night curfews to 50 percent seating capacity in restaurants and malls to schools and theatres being shut, the state authorities are rolling out new guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19. Various states and union territories are making the Covid-19 vaccination mandatory for citizens to visit places such as malls, clubs, public places, etc.

However, the centre informed the Supreme Court that while Covid-19 vaccination is voluntary, any misconceived doubts or motivated propaganda against it might lead to vaccine reluctance at a critical time when the federal and state governments are making every effort to vaccinate every individual.

Despite centre saying that the vaccination is not mandatory while travelling from one state to another in India, but few states and union territories are making the vaccination compulsory. Why?

Tamil Nadu is one such state which has made vaccination compulsory in its state for the citizens visiting to public places such as clubs, restaurants, malls, clubs.

The coronavirus cases in Jaipur, Rajasthan are at a peak. So to control the situation in the city, the state government has imposed a night curfew in the city. The Rajasthan government is also planning to mandate vaccination in the state. West Bengal has restricted entry to public parks without a vaccination certificate while Kerala has restricted entry to shopping malls.

Many districts and Panchayats such as Sihoda and Raisen in Madhya Pradesh, and Gadag and Sarewada in Karnataka have prohibited those who have not been vaccinated from receiving basic services such as rations.

The government of Assam has earlier threatened to withhold salaries from government workers who had not been vaccinated. District administrations in certain states, including Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain, Rewa, Satna, and Datia, and Uttar Pradesh’s Firozabad and Bareilly, have issued orders to reduce the salaries of unvaccinated government employees.

Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur have issued orders restraining people from running their business, or practicing their professions without getting vaccinated have been most common.
