BJP’s New Delhi CM will not stay at Sheesh Mahal residence: Reports

Published

on

BJP’s newly elected CM for Delhi will not stay at Sheesh Mahal, the official residence of previous CM Arvind Kejriwal.

In a significant move following its triumph in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided that the newly-elected Chief Minister of Delhi will not take residence at the opulent Sheesh Mahal bungalow in Civil Lines, sources close to the matter confirmed on Saturday. The bungalow had previously served as the official residence for former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

The decision to forgo Sheesh Mahal comes after years of controversy surrounding the property. The BJP had previously criticized Kejriwal’s tenure, labeling the bungalow as a symbol of lavish spending, dubbing it “Sheesh Mahal”—a term used to highlight what the party alleged was a massive renovation scam during Kejriwal’s time in office.

BJP makes historic comeback in Delhi

The BJP made a dramatic return to power in Delhi, securing 48 seats in the 70-member assembly, a stunning rise from their previous 2020 tally of just eight seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had swept the 2020 elections with 62 seats, saw its numbers plummet to just 22 seats this time. The Congress party, once a key player in Delhi, failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive election.

While the BJP has yet to formally announce its pick for the new Chief Minister, several names are circulating within party circles. Parvesh Verma, a key figure in the party and the victor of the high-profile battle against Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi seat, is being touted as a leading contender. Verma, who previously served as a two-time Member of Parliament (MP) for West Delhi, defeated Kejriwal in a constituency the AAP leader had comfortably won for three consecutive terms.

Who will lead Delhi?

Alongside Verma, other potential candidates for the CM post include Satish Upadhyay, who secured a victory in the Malviya Nagar constituency by defeating AAP’s Somnath Bharti, and Ashish Sood, the new MLA from Janakpuri. Jitendra Mahajan, a three-time MLA from Rohtas Nagar, and Vijender Gupta, who has served as the president of the Delhi BJP and represents the Rohini seat, are also among the names being considered for the role.

Speaking after the BJP’s election victory, Verma emphasized that the party leadership would make the final decision on the Chief Minister.

Oath ceremony expected after PM Modi’s US visit

Sources suggest that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister of Delhi is likely to take place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi returns from his official visit to the United States. Modi is set to travel to Washington on February 12 and 13 for meetings with US officials, marking his first trip to the country since Donald Trump’s inauguration.

As the dust settles on the high-stakes election, all eyes are now on who will lead the capital city into its next chapter under BJP governance, particularly with such a dramatic shift in the political landscape.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday welcomed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s strong performance in the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026, saying the “lotus has bloomed” in the state as the party crossed the majority mark in early results.

In a post on X, Modi thanked the people of West Bengal and described the outcome as a reflection of public trust. He said he bows to every voter for their support, adding that the mandate reflects faith in governance and development-focused politics.

The BJP’s surge in the 294-seat assembly marks a significant political shift in the state, where the party has not previously formed a government. The results indicate a major challenge to the long-standing dominance of the Trinamool Congress.

The election is part of a broader round of state polls across India, where the BJP has shown strong momentum. The party’s performance in West Bengal is being seen as one of the most significant developments in this election cycle.

With counting trends favouring the BJP, focus now turns to final results and the formation of the new government in the state.

Stalin loses Kolathur seat in Tamil Nadu results 2026 as TVK’s VS Babu scores upset

Media reports suggest MK Stalin has lost his Kolathur stronghold to TVK’s VS Babu in Tamil Nadu election results 2026.

MK Stalin

In a significant political development in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results 2026, Chief Minister M. K. Stalin is reported to have lost the Kolathur constituency, according to media reports based on counting data.

As per these reports, Stalin was defeated by V. S. Babu of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), marking a notable upset in a seat long regarded as a stronghold of the DMK leader.

Kolathur, located in Chennai, has been closely associated with Stalin for years, making the reported outcome particularly significant in the current election cycle. Earlier counting trends had indicated a tight contest, with Stalin trailing before the result was reported.

The development comes amid a strong showing by actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which has performed competitively across several constituencies in the state, according to media reports.

While the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has been leading in multiple seats, the reported loss in Kolathur is being viewed as a key moment in the party’s overall performance.

Final results across Tamil Nadu are still being compiled as counting continues.

Vijay’s TVK emerges single largest party but will he be CM? AIADMK has the answer

Early trends in Tamil Nadu election results 2026 show Vijay’s TVK gaining ground, triggering speculation over possible alliances with AIADMK.

Actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) put up a stellar show knocking all expectations to the wayside by leading in over 100 seats. Early trends in the Tamil Nadu Assembly election results 2026 have sparked political speculation about possible post-result alliances.

As counting progresses across the 234 constituencies, TVK’s strong debut performance has placed it among the top players in the state’s political landscape. The party, formed just a few years ago, appears to be challenging the long-standing dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

The early trends indicate a competitive, multi-cornered contest, with TVK either leading or closely trailing the established parties in several seats. This has led to growing discussions about whether a post-poll alignment could emerge, particularly involving AIADMK, depending on the final numbers.

The expectation that Vijay would only make a dent and not trigger a seismic shift as held by many observers looked to have come a cropper. The state’s Gen Z population seems to have convinced their families to vote for the star’s party against the ruling MK Stalin-led DMK. Despite fighting his first election, the challenge posed by Vijay has found many takers given that his party led in most of the 26 seats that make up the Chennai region, a DMK stronghold.

Despite all talk of various combinations making the rounds, TVK has consistently dismissed speculation about any alliance with AIADMK, maintaining its independent political stance.

The evolving trends suggest that even without a clear majority, TVK could play a crucial role in government formation if the results produce a fractured mandate. Observers note that the party’s performance reflects a shift in voter sentiment and the possible emergence of a third force in Tamil Nadu politics. The state has consistently voted in rival formations barring once when the AIADMK won the elections consecutively.

With counting still underway, the final outcome will determine whether alliance talks gain momentum or if a single party secures enough seats to form the government independently.
