In the aftermath of a decisive victory in the Delhi elections, which saw the BJP securing 48 out of 70 seats, murmurs are growing about the party’s potential choice for the next Chief Minister of the national capital. With the AAP’s decade-long hold over Delhi shattered, the BJP is now turning its attention to government formation. However, as the leadership deliberates, multiple names are circulating for the coveted position, including some from outside the legislative assembly.
While BJP leaders have remained tight-lipped, party insiders suggest that the next CM will most likely be selected from the newly-elected batch of MLAs. One of the prominent contenders is Parvesh Verma, the current Member of Parliament for West Delhi, who recently gained national attention for his victory over AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Verma’s name has surfaced due to his strong presence in the capital’s political scene and his family’s political legacy, being the son of former Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma.
Other possible candidates include Satish Upadhyay, the former Delhi BJP president, now elected from Malviya Nagar; senior party leader Vijender Gupta; and new MLAs Ashish Sood from Janakpuri and Pawan Sharma from Uttam Nagar. However, BJP is known for its ability to surprise when it comes to choosing its top leadership, which leaves room for speculation and intrigue.
In a new twist, sources have revealed that the BJP may also consider a woman MLA for the role. This would mark a significant shift, with the party’s roster of 48 newly elected members including four women: Neelam Pahalwan, who made history as the first female MLA from Najafgarh; Rekha Gupta, a former Delhi University Students’ Union president; Poonam Sharma, who emerged victorious from Wazirpur; and Shikha Roy, who triumphed over senior AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj in the assembly elections.
Moreover, caste equations appear to be an important consideration, with BJP reportedly evaluating the prospect of choosing an MLA from the Scheduled Caste category. Four newly elected BJP MLAs hail from this demographic: Raj Kumar Chauhan (Mangolpuri), Ravikant Ujjain (Trilokpuri), Ravinder Indraj Singh (Bawana), and Kailash Gangwal (Madipur).
The decision-making process is reportedly taking place behind closed doors, with BJP’s top leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party president JP Nadda, engaged in strategic talks. Following the victory, a meeting between Nadda and Shah at the latter’s residence outlined the path forward for the party, though the final announcement is yet to come.
Sources close to the party suggest that the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister will take place after Modi’s return from a scheduled trip to the United States. The BJP is said to be planning a grand event to mark the party’s historic comeback to power in Delhi after 26 years, with Chief Ministers from all NDA-ruled states expected to be present.
As BJP moves closer to finalizing its pick for Delhi’s top post, all eyes remain on how the party will balance caste considerations, gender representation, and political experience in choosing the next leader of India’s capital.
