Sitaare Zameen Par review: Aamir Khan leads a heartfelt tale of inclusion and redemption

Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par combines humour and heart in a sports drama that celebrates neurodiverse talent and the power of redemption.

Sitare Zameen Par

Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, is an emotionally resonant sports drama that follows a familiar narrative arc but finds its strength in authenticity and heart. Headlined by Aamir Khan, who plays a hot-headed coach undergoing a journey of self-discovery, the film stands out for its groundbreaking portrayal of neurodiverse characters and their empowering performances.

Aamir Khan, returning to the big screen after Laal Singh Chaddha, plays Gulshan, a man battling personal demons and a tarnished reputation. Forced by a court to coach a basketball team of ten neurodiverse players as punishment for reckless behaviour, he starts off unwilling but gradually finds purpose, connection, and growth in their shared struggles.

The film is an Indian adaptation of the 2018 Spanish film Campeones, and while it doesn’t tread new ground in terms of story, it distinguishes itself by casting ten first-time actors with special needs. These young performers, each portraying a richly individual character, infuse the film with refreshing realism and dignity.

From Golu Khan, a fiercely angry girl played by Simran Mangeshkar, to the eccentric dye-obsessed Ayush Bhansali, each character adds depth and humour to the narrative. Gulshan’s interactions with these players become the heart of the film, as they reflect his own inner turmoil and help guide him to redemption.

The screenplay by Divy Nidhi Sharma avoids melodrama, choosing instead to focus on light humour and quiet emotional beats. The film subtly challenges societal definitions of “normal” and celebrates diversity without ever being preachy. The result is an uplifting and inclusive sports drama that champions the power of second chances.

Director RS Prasanna ensures that the narrative never turns patronising, letting the performers breathe life into their roles organically. Aamir Khan, while central to the plot, steps back at key moments, allowing the new actors to take the spotlight – a move that strengthens the film’s overall message.

With its sensitive portrayal of intellectual disabilities and its strong ensemble cast, Sitaare Zameen Par is not just a film about basketball – it’s a story of learning, acceptance, and the quiet triumphs of those often left on the margins. Despite its familiar beats, this is a film that hits where it matters most: the heart.
