On Thursday, the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka Government to take decisive action against groups obstructing the release of Kamal Haasan’s film “Thug Life” across the state, emphasizing the importance of upholding freedom of expression in cinematic arts.
Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan, presiding over the case, acknowledged the state’s pledge to deploy adequate security for theatres screening the film.
The bench expressed concern over potential disruptions, stating it aims to prevent situations where public sentiments are inflamed, leading to halted film releases, cancelled stand-up performances, or restrictions on artists’ creative expressions, such as poetry recitals.
To ensure a smooth rollout, the court urged the state to curb any “divisive forces” threatening the film’s exhibition. Satisfied with the government’s assurance, the Supreme Court concluded the public interest litigation (PIL) without issuing additional directives, trusting the state to maintain law and order.
On June 17, the court had strongly rebuked the Karnataka Government for failing to facilitate the film’s theatrical release, asserting that mobs and vigilantes must not be permitted to dominate public spaces. The case stemmed from a petition filed by M. Mahesh Reddy, who challenged the non-screening of “Thug Life” in Karnataka.
On Wednesday, June 18, 2025, RT Nagar police issued a notice to Karnataka Rakshana Vedike activist Praveen Shetty, following a Karnataka High Court order mandating the film’s statewide release. The notice, posted outside Shetty’s residence, warned of legal repercussions for protests violating the court’s ruling, restricting demonstrations to Bengaluru’s Freedom Park. Unauthorised protests elsewhere would face strict action, it added.
Police attempted to personally deliver the notice, but Shetty refused acceptance, denying responsibility for any protests. Authorities have implemented robust security arrangements statewide to prevent disturbances, including increased patrols and coordination with theatre managements to ensure public safety during screenings.
