West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly rebuked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his recent statement branding the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as thieves. Speaking at a government programme in Bardhaman, where benefits of social welfare schemes were distributed, Banerjee said the remark was an insult not only to her party but also to the people of West Bengal.
Banerjee said the Prime Minister should show the same respect for her position that she shows for his and expressed shock at his remark calling the people of West Bengal thieves, noting that such comments demean both her office and the state.
She accused the Centre of withholding funds intended for development and welfare, claiming that this has placed a heavy burden on the state exchequer. She stated that despite the state having responded to all queries, the Centre continued to halt fund disbursement while calling West Bengal thief. She said that 186 central teams had been sent to probe corruption charges in the state and found nothing, adding, that giving zero marks despite answering all questions was unfair and said the insult would not be tolerated.
Banerjee also criticized Modi for ignoring corruption in the so-called double-engine BJP governments of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Bihar. She claimed that, in reality, he had turned a blind eye to the functioning of these states, where corruption was reportedly at its highest.
Her sharp remarks came in response to Modi’s speech at a public meeting in Kolkata on August 22, where he had alleged that corruption, crime and the TMC are synonymous. He accused the West Bengal government of misusing central funds, claiming that money intended for public welfare was being siphoned off by TMC workers.
Banerjee also mocked the Modi’s frequent visits to West Bengal ahead of elections, remarking that he comes like a migratory bird every time elections are near. She reiterated that her administration had submitted all necessary details to the Union government regarding the utilisation of central funds.
Positioning herself against the BJP’s narrative, Banerjee declared that West Bengal would not accept being branded as corrupt, insisting that her government has been transparent and accountable in its functioning.
