Ranbir Kapoor-Nargis Fakhri starrer Rockstar has completed 10 years today, and it feels like it was just yesterday that this movie was released and left us all impressed. With the phenomenal acting of Ranbir Kapoor and of course AR Rahman’s classic Hindi music album that still makes us go, ‘Sajra savera mera tan barse kajara andhera jalti lau… Kun Faya Kun,’ this movie is surely most people’s forever favourite.

Now that we are all grown up, so I decided to watch the film again, but this time, there was a sudden realisation that made me question the Indian cinema that is it okay for Bollywood to glorify a toxic male like Jordan, the role played by Ranbir Kapoor in Rockstar.

So, now let’s talk about the toxic guy Jordan, who was just doing things because he had to do something in the movie. But our question is was it different from other Bollywood movies? Like, in every other romantic Bollywood movie, there is a guy who falls in love with a girl, but she gets forcefully married to some other guy (as if a woman can’t just say no to things).

However, the guy is still crazy in love with the same girl and follows her, does toxic things like standing out in front of her house, treats other women like nothing instead of saying that he still has a thing for his college love. Because, why would he do that? Bollywood male lead characters are not this way. Right? But, but, but.. the woman is still married and is diagnosed with a disease that doctors can’t even treat. Well, wow, what a unique storyline. Isn’t it?

And, another unique twist in this story is that the woman’s health gets better when she is in the company of the toxic guy because as they say iron cuts iron.

However, in the end, the woman dies and leaves Jordan again broken-hearted with the song being played in the background (Naadan Parinde).

Now, it has been 10 years of Rockstar, and a lot has changed in the film industry but one thing that has not been changed yet is the love of people for toxic male lead characters in the cinema.
