Newlywed Bollywood actor Vicky Kaushal has started the prep of his much-anticipated movie Sam Bahadur. The film is a biopic on Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw. The National Award-winning actor will once again don the Indian Army uniform and play the titular war hero in the biographical drama. The makers of the film have not yet made any declaration about the release date of the film but producer Ronnie Screwvala had given an update about the other star cast members of the film.

The story of Sam Bahadur will revolve around the first Indian Army officer (played by Vicky Kaushal) who was promoted to the rank of field marshal. Dangal girls are also going to be a part of the Meghna Gulzar’s directorial. While Sanaya Malhotra will play Manekshaw’s wife Silloo, Fatima Sana Shaikh will portray the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on silver screen.

But do you know who was Sam Manekshaw?

Born on 3 April 1914, Sam Manekshaw was the chief of Indian Army who led the Indian side during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971. Manekshaw was also the first ever Indian Army officer who promoted to the rank of field marshal during the British rule. Moreover, his active military career spanned for over four decades covering five wars. Sam Manekshaw began his service in the British Indian Army during the World War II.

Do you know that Manekshaw’s comments about the political leadership during 1962 allowed his opponents to label him as unpatriotic. As unfortunate as a incident like this, a young man protecting the boarder and leading the Indian army from the front was charged with sedition. But after being exonerated in the subsequent court of inquiry, he went ahead and became the seventh chief of the army staff in 1969.

Several victorious campaigns by the Indian force were conducted under Manekshaw’s command. Be it the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971 or the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, Sam Manekshaw has a big contribution in these events. Later he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan, the second and third highest civilian awards of India.

Unfortunately, Sam Manekshaw died at the age of 94 due to the complications from pneumonia at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Tamil Nadu on 27 June 2008. Reportedly, his last words were “I’m okay!” However, owing to the controversies of Manekshaw’s post-retirement, it was reported that his funeral lacked VIP representation, and no National Day of Mourning was declared which was customary for a leader of national importance in those days. It will be interesting to see how Meghna Gulzar will depict Sam Manekshaw larger than life history on big screen.

Aamir Khan starrer Sitaare Zameen Par crosses Rs 90-crore mark

Published

Aamir Khan’s latest cinematic offering, Sitaare Zameen Par, has amassed a nett collection of ₹90 crore domestically within its debut week. Directed by R S Prasanna, the film hit cinemas on 20 June 2025, serving as a spiritual successor to the widely acclaimed 2007 release Taare Zameen Par, and has struck a chord with audiences.

According to Sacnilk, the film opened strongly with ₹10.7 crore nett at the domestic box office, setting the stage for a solid run. Touted as a heartfelt exploration of neurodivergence, Sitaare Zameen Par features Aamir as a basketball coach guiding ten differently-abled individuals towards triumph.

The cast includes Genelia D’Souza alongside fresh talents Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar, with the screenplay penned by Divy Nidhi Sharma. The project is a collaborative production by Aamir Khan, Aparna Purohit, and Ravi Bhagchandka under Aamir Khan Productions.

Critics have noted its connection to the 2018 Spanish drama Campeones (remade in English in 2023 with Woody Harrelson), echoing Taare Zameen Par’s mission to raise awareness about neurodiversity. However, some reviews suggest a didactic approach, with one stating, “Every scene is crafted to deliver a lesson, often tipping the balance from entertaining to preachy, which can frustrate viewers despite Aamir’s knack for edifying cinema.”

The film’s narrative, centred on mentorship and inclusion, has resonated emotionally, contributing to its box office success. Its opening figures and positive word of mouth hint at a potential surge over the weekend.

Earlier today, Aamir participated in a virtual fan meet to celebrate the milestone, sharing anecdotes from the set and praising the young cast’s dedication. “Their energy inspired every frame,” he remarked, boosting fan excitement online. The session, joined by enthusiastic supporters, highlighted the film’s impact, with many lauding its uplifting message.

As Sitaare Zameen Par progresses into its second week, its ₹90 crore haul underscores Aamir Khan’s enduring appeal. Whether it maintains this momentum amidst mixed critical reception remains to be seen, but its strong start has certainly reignited interest in his storytelling legacy.
