Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam’s highly awaited film Thug Life has encountered yet another setback after a lacklustre theatrical performance. Released on 5 June, the movie struggled to draw crowds and has been withdrawn from most cinemas across India within three weeks. Its premature move to streaming has now triggered penalties from multiplex chains.

According to a Pinkvilla report, Thug Life will incur a fine of ₹25 lakh for violating the industry-standard 8-week theatrical window before its OTT release. The film is slated to premiere on Netflix just four weeks after its cinema debut, halving the customary period observed by national multiplex chains. A source cited in the report explained, “North India adheres strictly to an 8-week window. With Thug Life breaching this norm, the National Multiplex Chains have levied a fine on the producers. They will lose their theatrical share from the Hindi version, totalling ₹25 lakh.”

The source further disclosed that the film’s digital rights were initially valued at ₹130 crore, but Netflix renegotiated the deal due to its underwhelming box office results. The revised agreement settled at ₹110 crore, including a concession for a shortened OTT window.

This marks the second instance of Haasan’s production team deviating from the 8-week guideline, following Indian 2. Despite pleas from multiplexes to postpone the digital release, Thug Life is still expected to launch on Netflix shortly. The film boasts an ensemble cast including Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ali Fazal, and others. Co-written and co-produced by Haasan, it is backed by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies. Recently, the movie sparked controversy over Haasan’s comments on Tamil-Kannada issues, adding to its challenges.

Earlier today, at 14:30 IST, the producers held a virtual press conference to address the situation, confirming the OTT timeline and apologising for the theatrical shortfall. A representative noted, “We’re aligning with audience preferences,” hinting at the decision’s commercial rationale. The session, attended by industry observers, shed light on the fine’s impact, though it failed to quell multiplex frustrations.

As Thug Life transitions to streaming, the penalty and reduced theatrical window underscore the film’s struggle to meet expectations, leaving fans and analysts awaiting its digital reception.
