Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73. The Indian classical music icon died of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. He breathed his last at a hospital in San Francisco. Zakir Hussain is also a four time Grammy award winner and has received the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian award.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also expressed that he is deeply saddened at the passing away of tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. He added that Hussain was a musical genius and a cultural icon, who popularised Indian classical music on a global stage and left behind an impressive legacy. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute mentioning that a rhythm fell silent today. He expressed that he is pained by the demise of the tabla maestro, Ustad Zakir Hussain.
