Actor Paresh Rawal issued an apology for his Cook fish for Bengalis remark on Friday, which created a significant stir on social media and accused him of Bengali hatred. He offered a clarification, saying that he did not target Bengalis but illegal Bangladeshis.

Paresh Rawal took to Twitter and wrote of course, the fish is not the issue as Gujaratis do cook and eat fish. He later clarified that by Bengali, he meant illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingya. He further said that he would apologize if his remarks hurt people’s feelings and sentiments.

While campaigning in Gujarat in Valsad, former BJP MP Rawal said the people of Gujarat would tolerate inflation but not Bangladeshis and Rohingya next door. He said gas cylinders are expensive, but their price will come down. People will get employment too. But what will happen if Rohingya migrants and Bangladeshis start living around you, like in Delhi? What will you do with gas cylinders? Cook fish for the Bengalis? Gujarati people can tolerate inflation, but not this level of verbal abuse. A person among them needs to wear a diaper on his mouth, he added.

Many Twitter users were outraged, accusing the actor of instilling hatred in Bengalis and labeling the actor’s speech as xenophobia and dog whistling against Rohingya and Bangladeshi Muslims. One of the users commented Your choice of words should have been clearer sir. There is a difference between Hindu Bengalis and illegal Muslim Bangladeshis (East Pakistan).

Regarding Paresh Rawal’s comment that Bengalis eat fish and how it is related to Rohingyas, Trinamool MP Kirti Azad asked if Rawal was hinting that the BSF and Union Home Ministry are not working properly as he said Bangladeshi and Rohingyas are entering India.

The first phase of the election took place on Thursday and the second phase will be held on December 5. The counting of votes will take place on December 8.
